I went on several longer drives (1hr +) with the Mag in the past two days. I decided to burn a little extra gas, turn on the AC, and give the Mag 15 an intensive listen. I could not find a single song that could put the Mag past its sound quality limits. Heavy metal to classic rock to new rock to alternative to hip hop to rap to jazz to reggae. It handles kick drums with chest thumping authority and bass guitars are smooth and the response is extremely flat for just throwing it in a sealed enclosure and not even messing with placement. Below is a list of songs I ran it through.
Artist: Jet
Album: Get Born
Notable Tracks:
-Look What You've Done
This song has some good bass guitar lines and a slow playing kick drum beat. Its a very mellow song but has some decent low, not a real challenge.
-Get Me Outta Here
This song has some fast repeating bass guitar and kick drum lines; the Mag handled it great, didn’t miss a single beat and was crystal clear.
-Lazy Gun
This song starts out with some good kick drums and bass guitar lines, nothing too complicated
Artist: Beastie Boys
Album: N/A
Notable Tracks:
-Intergalactic
I think everyone has heard this song, dropped and felt like I was being stopped on my chest, an improvement from my avalanche, which were mostly all bass and no kick.
-Paul Revere
Good thump, this isn’t a very bass heavy track
Artist: Bob Marley and The Wailers
Album: Africa Unite
Notable Tracks:
-Soul Rebel
This is a very bass heavy track which quick changing beat, it’s almost like an oscillating sound from low to high. The Mag reproduced it with stunning accuracy. It makes me like the song more than ever.
-Trenchtown Rock
This is one of my favorite songs, and this Mag did it justice.
-Jamming
Excellent low end response, I always though this track could use more enforcement with the bass and the Mag gave me the room to turn up the bass on the head unit to make it sound like I feel it should have been recorded.
-Three Little Birds
This has some very low string instrument playing throughout the song (lower than your average 4 string bass guitar) most systems don’t do it justice, but I was perfect here.
-Stand Up Jamrock
For those that do no know, this is an ashlee beedle remix between Welcome to Jamrock by Damien Marley and Get Up Stand up.
Artist: Ray Charles
Album: Ray
Notable Tracks:
-Mess Around
Not a very bass heavy track, in fact, most of this album is not very bass heavy. But if it isn’t there you will miss it.
-Georgia On My Mind
Artist: AC/DC
Album: Back in Black
Notable Tracks:
-Hells Bells
The intro to this song just isn’t as eerie with out the deepness of the bells. The Mag reproduced what little signal they got from the bells with perfect accuracy. Once the kick drum came in I knew it was going to be a good hells bells experience. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
-Let Me Put My Love Into You
Excellent lows with the bass guitar
-Shake A Leg
Double kicks where perfect and clear.
Artist: Jimmy Buffet
Album: Great American Summer
Notable Tracks:
-One Particular Harbor
There is a light beating throughout the song that often goes un noticed except for in the beginning but the Mag made it noticeable throughout the song in a very good way.
Artist: Slipknot
Album: N/A (single)
Track:
-Duality
Every kick drum was felt, every pound of the drum. I’m not much of a fan of this kind of music but It did the musicians justice.
Artist: Queen
Album: Greatest Hits
Notable Tracks:
-Bohemian Rhapsody
Does the intro line justice like no other. I actually got a few little hairs to stand up on the back of my neck, that hasn’t happened since the first few times I heard it on a good system.
I went few quite a few other songs but that is a wide enough selection. It performed in every genre and style I threw at it. All in all, the best subwoofer I’ve used in my opinion.
In the end I like it more than my Avalanche 18 because it has usable output up to 60-70Hz where the avalanche began a steep roll off past 50-55Hz and all output was lost by 60-65.
Now let me clarify liking it more than my avalanche 18, the ava is not sloppy by any means, but you need a strong STRONG mid-bass to use it in car. The Mag still wont play up to 80-100Hz like your entry level sub at Best Buy...Both are true subwoofers...the Mag simply can play a little higher and, therefore, blend a little better with my lack of mid-bass (I am working on that at the moment).
