Looking to upgrade my 2 12" EarthQuake Subs

I am new to car audio in general so I don't really know what I am doing. But I bought the aforementioned EarthQuake Subs in a ported box with a Sony Xplod XM-GTX1852 amp powering them for $175 from a friend who REALLY needed money lol. While I like them I want cleaner bass, they sound okay low, but turned up they honestly sound like crap, more of a mechanical sound than bass. (maybe IDK what im talking about). I have been looking around and I am very interested in a pair of Sundown SA-12D4 subs with a SAX-1200D amp powering them. The person I bought the 12" EQ subs from keeps telling me to buy BOSS AUDIO P126DVC because they are "rated" at crazy high RMS. I may be new to audio products but they look like crap, and I would never trust a $50 SUB rated at 1.15KW RMS :| Anyway am I right to avoid BOSS audio? And how would the sundown D4s compare to my current EQ 12"s?

its all in the enclosure man, you can put sundowns in a crappy box or pre-fab enclosure and they will sound like crap 2. Now in a correct box sa's will blow away the earthquakes. but i would def have someone on here make you a custom hand built box, u wont be disapointed. i have taken someones subs they said ****, put them in a correct box and you would think they had a whole new system.

boss audio is crap

$175 seems a little cheap for an amp of that wattage, do you own one? whats the build quality like?BTW I know its far better than the POS Xplod I have now
It might seem like that compaired to your findings of Boss Audio and Sony and other "Main Stream" brands offering 2000/RMS 4000max amps at $125. However there is no comparision. Those amps will never be able to come close to producing those numbers, and if one did, It would "CLIP" so bad that no subwoofer would take it. Stay on here and just Read READ read and try not to take what your friends say at home to serious, Because they are victims of main stream marketing. For 1200+ watts of GOOD,CLEAN,QUALITY power, around $200 and up is what your looking to spend. MB Quartz and Audiopipe are some of the VERY VERY few main stream brands that offer good decent power at those lower prices. But get yourself a correctly made box, A Good amp and you can make The subs you have now sound Way Better, And you will have a Good Stepping Stone for future projects down the road.

The only advice I can give you is not to rush anything and as a poster said above READ and READ SOME MORE. Now, there is a lot of false info on this site, but tons of really good info, so what you need to do is learn to weed out the buh shat. This isn't the only site out there to get good info, I will have close to 15 tabs up on my browser at one time researching stuff. Do some searching around and when you feel you are truly ready to buy something then go for it. But, you really need to get a good understanding on how things work. Ignore anything your buddies tell you because it's obvious to me that they do not know shit. If there is something you don't understand, then feel free to ask questions. You'll be able to narrow down the guys around here who truly know WTF they're doing. I'm no master guru but I have been around car audio for 20 years, and I damn near learn something new every day. Good luck!

I'm in no rush to spend my money, I pulled the trigger on this system I have now with out any research due to the low price and the fact that he was desperate. I blew all the door speakers in the truck I installed them in, (not even my truck) so I think that's really adding to the metallic "clanging" sound that plagues heavy bass songs. Thanks a lot for the reply btw, now im off to YT/Google/where ever. By the way do you know someone who makes custom boxes on order? It would be a while before I had one made, but I would feel more comfortable if I knew a professional was at the helm instead of some robot in china that made the box I have now. (Robots don't know how to bass)
