Yes 8 ohms will make a difference. You'll get 1/2 the power of 4 ohms. But you can parallel 2 of them and bridge an amp into them at 4 ohms.
I also heard that someone else made 6X9 subs.. JL maybe? I'll keep looking.
The Infinity Reference 6X9's I have in my deck are very effecient and have more output at 30 Hz than the Kicker 8" midbass' that I tried to use as subs. In a small car they'd make decent subs with 40 watts. I'm running 8" free air subs now and they're more than adequate - you could easily adapt 8's to a 6X9 hole.
