Looking for speakers, specific search. $100

I need help finding components or coaxials for my car. Size 6.5inches. I'm able to spend up to 110 MAX, absolute max, but I'd like to spend more around 80-90. I will be running them off an old Alpine amp that makes 70 watts rms at 4ohms.

I'm looking for good mid bass and twitters that arent so sharp they make your ears bleed. I'd like components but if know of really good coaxials I'll go for those. I listen to mostly rock and some rap if that matters.

The best coaxial I would think of right now are Hertz DCX 165's. Those are about $90.

As for components I was thinking Kicker KS650.2's or some Polks but idk. Those are like $110.

Although I haven't installed them yet(waiting on an amp), I can suggest the Image Dynamics CTX65 coaxials. I got some on eBay for $105 new from a store with a 1 year warranty. I just looked, and saw some for $99.99 with free shipping.

They're known for having smooth mids and not harsh tweets(silk dome).

I suggest that you buy Alpine SPR-57C coaxial speakers while they're still available. This is the old Alpine Type-R coaxial speaker. The current model Alpine SPR-68 should be at least as good, but it's well over $100 for a set. The old ones can be found for under $100.

My recommendation is based on my experience with the 6.5 component version of the same thing. Last year I bought Alpine Type R component speakers, and I thought for the price I paid they are awesome. The highs are clear and smooth without being fatiguing despite of being on axis. Midbass is pretty strong. The mids are muscular. I could feel the difference compared to my old speakers simply by the size of magnet. The woofers were so heavy compared to my older Infinity Reference speakers. The these Alpines can crank. The components have 110watt rating. The coaxial version has 100watt RMS rating. I have them running on a 150watt RMS channel but the gains are set to just 25%. You can go ahead and cross them as low as 70 or 60Hz. I have them crossed at 70Hz@24dB. I suppose that the 5x7/6x8 version will produce even better bass. For the money, either the coaxial or component version of Alpine Type R speakers is a very good deal. This is the best coaxial speaker available from Alpine and one of the best on the market. I have heard another really good budget speaker that's available in either coaxial or component version is Polk Audio MM. Supposedly it has more detailed highs and better bass than Type R. However, the Polk MM coaxial speakers cost about the same as the new Alpine Type R. For your budget, the old Type R is pretty good deal IMO.

Okay so this is what I've kinda come up with:

Components:

Cadence CWM-6KIT $80

Alpine SPS-600C $80

Kicker KS650.2 $100

Pioneer D1720C $110 (sound good but I heard they dont rly shine unless active? I'm running passive.)

Coaxials:

Hertz DCX 165 $90

Image Dynamics CTX65 coaxial $100 (idk how I feel about these being the company is shutting down, repairs, etc)

Alpine SPR-17C (couldnt find the ones u mentioned) $105

So let me start my asking 2 questions,

1) Wont 70 watts RMS be to little for 100 watt RMS speakers?

2) Are any of those coaxial actually better than the components listed?

Has anyone dealt with the above personally?

I personally think Alpine Type R's should run fine with just 70watt RMS amplifier. They run on 150wrms per bridged channel in my car, but the amp gains are turned to just 25%. I am actually thinking of "unbridging" the channels to see if that would improve SQ.

I did search for "SPR-57C" through google's shopping function, and it shows several hits, with lowest priced just under $90. My understanding is that Alpine Type S is nothing very special. Type S is fine if you want really cheap component speakers with inline crossover for tweeter only, possibly running off the head unit amplifier. The difference in sound of coaxial vs component speaker is entirely dependent on install. I personally prefer the sound of component speakers in my car, because I have the ability to mount the tweeters on my door sails. Having tweeters in the sails raises the sound stage. Some say this screws up the imaging, but I think the raised sound stage outweighs it for me. The woofer is at the bottom corner of the door. I also added some time delay through HU to center the sound stage. But I am also kind of lazy DYIer. If my car had no tweeter pods, I'd probably get coaxial speakers.

My car doesnt have pods and it seems like it would of betch to wire. And they will probably look bad, especially if I need to sell the car.

The car is a 95 corolla so no pods. I could put them but would it be worth it? I cant think of a place to mount them besides the A n B pillar by the windshield or in the door by the door handle.

Im between the coaxial listed and mostly the Pioneer and Cadence components, just b/c of price. Ugh I really have no clue what to do. haha. It's like I know components are suppose to be better so I feel like I might lean towards those but if I can get good sound from the coaxials I'd do that too.

My goals with these are 2 things. I want to them sound better than a factory bose system. And I want them to be able to sound good alone, since I dont be upgrading the rear. Possibly disconnecting them.

They seem to sell some for 100 and 150 on woofers etc. I heard they stopped making them though.

Do you know a good place to get them? On ebay they are all set at $150.

I have heard the Crescendo Audio components are pretty good for the money. Except their website says that they are sold out and I think they might be designing new models.

I also have heard the PG RSD's are excellent. I think awhile ago they were selling for pretty cheap but now the price has gone up a lot. Like you I am also looking for components to replace my cheap coaxials.

Components own Coaxials in every way. Just forget about coaxials all together and find a component set. Any of the ones you have listed will sound decent and being you have an amp to power them should get pretty loud.

BnR, I have heard that the VK's tweeter is pretty harsh even at -3. Otherwise I may consider them.
