1st off get a 12" youll get a lil better low end & make sure your amp can push it

With a box and all the wires using Phoenix Gold for around $500.00

This is a dual-sided response, beware!

I have to question what kind of sound quality (sq) you are looking for on your low budget? I ask this pointedly, because I think it is difficult to find sq quality components on a lower budget. I think you can find components that sound good, but probably wouldn't compare with more expensive systems, nor will have the same sound as components that are more expensive - the speaker materials matter and higher quality material costs more.

I don't know what you're driving, but what kind of space do you have to work with? I am selling a 10" bazooka dvc sub in a q-logic ported box that I think sounds great, but again, I wouldn't dare consider it a premium setup. $50 and it's yours...

Overall sq depends on speakers quality and placement. It typically demands some custom speaker placements due to the poor positioning of most door and dash factory speakers.

Start by determining your maximum budget - then go to a local shop and ask for their input and what they would do for the money. Most good shops will work with you to build your system. Since you are so new to the arena, don't think that you can do it all yourself, you'll never achieve sq that way...

i'm not looking for components.. just a sub and an amp for now. i was looking at either a 12" kappa perfects or a 12" idq10. are those good choices for sq? which one is a better choice? what type of amp would be good for either?

what type of wires would i need with that setup? what would be the best type of enclosure also?

thanks guys

The IDQ12 is a great sub, and I recommend using a Class D sub amp to power it. The IDQ is one of the best SQ you can get without breaking the bank. You probably want to build a custom enclosure or have one built for you. You would need to run wiring for power from the battery and a ground wire, also some wires from the headunit for remote turn on and the signal wires. You should run at least 8 gauge wire but 4 gauge is pretty much what everyone uses unless they have a really high output system.

This is the kind of response that drives me crazy! The word components doesn't just refer to your front-end speakers - it refers to your entire system and the individual pieces (components) that make it. Your sub is only 1 speaker to help your sq package - your desire to focus on the sub gives me an indication that you aren't really looking for sq, you are looking for a good sounding system that has really good bass. Not really sq or spl - just another system...

To focus on sq, you need to focus on your head unit and it's pre-outs, your processing and its effects, your wiring to distribute the sound as best it can with the cleanest signal, and your speakers and respective power to reproduce the sound as it was intended to be reproduced. So far, unless you have every other aspect covered (doubtful considering your sefl-proclaimed rookie status) I would step away from the subs and rethink your project.

Otherwise, don't post that you want a sq system, post that you want a system that sounds good with a sub that can make some good boom cheap.

i see someone asking for a sq set up as being someone that doesnt need to impress strangers as they drive by? someone actually interested in listening to music.what exact speakers amp etc they use in the end is negotiable.but a sub is always good imhumbleo

Point taken.. let me rephrase.

I do not have the budget to get a complete sq system. I only want to spend money on a sub and an amp. I just purchased an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 on eBay. Can you recommend me an amp and headunit to go with the Kappa Perfect?

Do you think it's not worth it to have an amp and sub without other components? I'm sure it'll still drastically improve sq from my stock system.

Thank you.

What are you driving? Are the stock speakers really that decent? My first move has always been to replace the factory speakers with actual 2-way or 3-way speakers. Most factory speakers use whizzer cones to produce the highs and alot of the middle, it is a terrible way to produce sound, but extremely cost effective. Changing out your mid and high will produce an instant change in your listening quality, plus at high volume, you won't experience ear-fatigue as soon. Check out Sony's Xplod line - they sell at Rex for about $30 a pair - pretty decent for the price.

My second move is to add an amp to those speakers I installed in the factory locations.

Third move - add a sub. I'm a space freak - I hate giving up cargo room, thus I try to put it somewhere it won't intrude. Subs provide an amazing improvement to a system, although I put them third in line because people all too often don't upgrade their mid/highs (or give them enough power) and end up having a really booming system that drowns out the mid/highs from the factory.

The Infinity Kappa line is great, you'll be really happy with it. They are also very efficient, thus they don't need a lot of power to realy drive them. You may want to look at an amp that pushes 100x2 that can bridge to 250 x1 (or somewhere in that range). The sub will have plenty of power and when you do upgrade further, you can move that amp to your mid/highs and power the Kappa with an amp bridged to around 400 watts. Honestly, with where your project is at, I wouldn't worry about the name brand of the amp - look at sony or kenwood. They are economical and will hold up over time.

Good luck!
