looking for an amp shell

I'm planning on building a mobile computer system and I've been trying to find a good (computer) case for my needs, haven't had much sucess. then I thought, "hey! why not use an amp shell?!". it's basicly a giant heat sink well sheilded and some of them are quite large. so is there some site or something that specalises in selling just amp cases?

I'd need something that is at least 12"X10'X2.5" internaly (preferably a bit bigger).

I looked at Shuttle, they don't seem to sell just cases and besides it's FlexATX and I want mini-ITX (mostly due to power consumption).

I was planning on useing a VIA EPIA M1000 mobo and a Morex powersupply (OPUS is too ****ed expensive).

on top of that amps look cooler:)

maybe there was a flaw in my logic of asking a board of people with lots of experience in car audio if they had any fried amps //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif.

maybe I should wait untill I actualy have some parts and hard numbers before I go looking for a case mod project.

oh cmon. build it yourself. *fwa*

better yet.

go buy a cheap laptop man. saves lots of hassle, and can support wireless internet

***wireless is a must have for car audio, im not a fan of swapping hdd's or inserting flash media to update my car... just park it in the driveway, connect to the desktop, and download your new album, or surf the web.. or go *war driving* and steal some free wireless in some suburban neighborhoods****

mmm. war driving... what fun.

req, I wouldnt have guessed you were a nerd as well. Why type of system do you run? If you dfidnt guess, I am a fellow nerd/wardriver. I am planning on putting a mobile computer system in my car as well but it will be a few months before I begin.

To bob, I am hoping that you know your stuff about computers and you have made a computer mod before, otherwise making an amp case into a computer case is going to play hell for you. Otherwise, I think I can get ahold of some cases if you do indeed know what you are doing.

I've made sevral systems before, never did any modding before, I was kinda wanting to give it a shot here, but after much thinking about it, I've decided that after all I'm (probly) going to go with the OPUS case/PSU.

the only thing I'm still realy worried about is the temperature ranges it's going to have to work at, I'm not sure if a standard laptop HDD is going to be tough enough to handle a St.Louis winter, wich can get as cold as -20f. maybe useing some sort of removeable harddrive would be the better option.

you dont want to be luggin a HD around with you wherever you go, I have left my laptop in my car for a few below freezing nights here in Iowa and they have done just fine. The laptop hard drives are much tougher than most people think. If you have any questions about the computer side of things I know my stuff. Good luck!

I'm sure it'd be able to survive sitting there, but would I be able to turn it on? the opperational temp ranges of most hdds is above 40f (though they are suposed to be able to survive down to -40 so long as they arn't turned on). it's sort of an odd problem, usualy you don't have to worry about things being too cold.

you can turn your drive on when it is that cold, shouldnt have any effect on the drive. I turned my laptop on right out of the car and it was -20. Unless you get incredibly cold winters and your car isnt insulated/sealed very well, you should be fine. Just make sure no moisture gets inside the drive...that is what would kill it.
