looking for a 19-20" LCD

my mom wants an lcd for her pc, she has right now a 21" NEC crt....its big and heavy (ill prally get it) but im gonna buy her and my dad at least a 19", prally a widescreen...i dont want anything thats shitty, but they dont need the absolute more expensive on the other hand either...what should i get? im looking to spend around 200....they have some pretty decent deals now on newegg, im browsing through there now...

I picked up a Samsung 19" widescreen LCD with a 4ms pixel response time at Sam's Club for $200. Actually, here it is. It looks like the price is now $215, but it is a really nice monitor.

I forgot to mention, and hopefully it isn't too late now, but make sure that their video card can support widescreen monitors. And if it has DVI output that's even better. The monitor will come with a DVI-to-VGA adapter, so it will still work if their video card doesn't have DVI out.

my curent monitor was one of the first 'affordable' lcd's two years ago, and it doesn't have dvi, and the scanning is WAY more noticeable than with a dvi display

for instance, the white background of this page has all sorts of zips and zaps shooting across it constantly (you can't SEE them, it's more just visual disturbance) compared to a true dvi hookup that is just pure, constant white.

i honestly can't wait to get a new monitor, because this thing gives me WAY more eyestrain than even my old crt did.

vga was NOT intended for digital displays, plain and simple

ill have to check when i get home but i doubt it. and i doubt it supports WS. this isnt good.

what about if it doesnt support WS? will it just display it in 4:3? if so thats gay, and ill make them buy a new video card lol.

they dont game or anything (obviously lol)

whats a decent video card that supports WS...nothing fancy....

most do.....

the video card knows nothing about the shape of the monitor, as long as the resolution of the monitor is less than the maximum output resolution of the video card, it will be fine.

and MOST cards manufactured in the last 2-3 years all have dvi, which roughly corresponds with how long lcd's have been affordable

if their computer has onboard video, it may not have dvi, but all but the cheapest pc's have actual accelerated video devices

id imagine it would work since she has a 21" now (4:3 though) and this new one is a 19"...

Most widescreen LCD monitors are 1440 X 900, including this Samsung (assuming that's the one you decided on). Most video cards from the past few years do support widescreen displays. Basically if they don't support widescreen, you'd get a stretched out 4:3 image.
