I have a 3 year old HP dv5 lap top. I recently replaced the battery with a 12 cell battery so i wont have to bring the charger with me to classes. But now it wont charge. The connection seems a little loose and the charging light wont flicker at all when moved.

Now my question, should i replace the cable or the charging port? Both are cheap but im thinking its the port. But not 100% sure and i dont a soldering gun either. Any help is appreciated.

Thats a common problem with laptops, if you used it while on the charger and moved around they mess up fairly easy its sounds like it could be a problem on the motherboard which in that case your laptop being that old is basiclly trash //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif you should be able to see some sort of charging could you charge the battery any other way? try that if you get no power still you'll know its the motherboard

All of my friends run a mac. So none of theirs will work. I'll have to bring it to the tech lab on campus to see if they can give me a hand. It wouldn't be too difficult to just soldier a new one to the board?

The issue is getting the board out. I had an HP and it was **** near impossible to disassemble without HP's tools.

On the charger there should be two pieces. One piece that plugs into the outlet and then into the black box. Have another one of those you can check with to rule out that piece of the charger?

I dont have a spare of either, pretty sure the tech lab on campus has everything needed. I have a few friends that are comp sci so maybe they have some ideas. Not a fan of using internet on my phone.

They stopped soldering ports on boards a good while ago, 5-10% of models still are soldered on but not many

Dont need to solder, it's a cable that plugs into the board, one end plugs into board, other end is the port, that's actually the reason it's loose, because with most hp's it just slides into the frame and isn't overly-secure, many mistake the looseness for being a bad port when it's just a design flaw

Sometimes it does require pulling the board out, sometimes if you're lucky you can halfway-dissassemble it and replace it there

I can do it all for you for not too much $$ if you want, that and the cable-ports are actually pretty cheap, usually in the range of 10-20 bux

But i would definitely check if it's the charger first before all of that

And if by the minute chance it is soldered, it's not something easy to do yourself, i've seen many damaged/killed boards on account of soldering ports

I had a DV6 series laptop made the same time frame the OP did and they were definitely soldered in.

Like i said, 5-10% of models still are, pretty sure the dv5's aren't though. Just replaced a dv4 cable recently.

Need the exact model to be for sure, should be on the back, would be best to upload a picture of the model info as there's 2-3 different ways to identify HP's

Also if it is soldered there's a few companies you can mail the laptop or board to and they'll solder a new one on for you, actually not too expensive

But honestly at that point short of having it re-soldered you cant definitively tell if it's the port or the board, short of visual signs

My girlfriend's HP had the same problem, you had to put pressure on the side of the plug to get it to make contact. She sent the laptop back to HP because it was still under warranty. When it got back the port on the laptop felt much sturdier/tighter. No clue what they did to it though...

Probably replaced that cable and re-slid it into the frame, hard to describe but they tend to come out of the slots they slide into over time making them more loose

Dunno, personally I'm not the biggest fan of HP, but thats what you need above, it's not soldered
