I know how it works, but where do i get the REM lead from to turn on the amp? Do i still have to tear apart the deck and find the REM lead and run a wire or is there some other way?

The remote wire is the blue/white wire on the head-unit.

STOCK HU? get a send and return harness to make an intermediate harness. This will give you access for your LOC, bass-blockers, REM, and speaker wires. You can tap into the RED wire, which is the ignition wire. So yes you have to take out your dash or get to the steering column where your ignition is.

****... alright thanks guys. My neighbor is fussy about keeping her stock deck and i don't want to mess around behind her dash if i can help it

If its the stock HU, use the Radio fuse in the fuse box inside the car....No need to take out you head unit! Just add the remote around the fuse and you are GOOD TO GO..
