Line level input problem

^^ Edit: Forum name should read "speaker level input problem" (Hehe, I'm tired and frustrated. Thinking is difficult right now)

Hey guys. I just recently decided to throw a 10 inch MTX sub in my '97 Accord and I'm having a problem. Seeing as it is the stock head unit, it does not have RCA outs on it, so I used the high level input from the rear speakers to the 4 pin connector on the amp. All works well, at moderate listening levels. HOWEVER, when I turn it up as well as when I just freshly turn on the head unit, the sub along with the rear speakers do nothing at all. A quick disconnect and reconnect of the 4 pin connector solves this issue, but it happens far too often for me to be crawling back there every time I turn on the radio. I think the issue could be the amp going into protect mode from the excess voltage created at startup and when the volume gets higher, but I don't know why this would cut out the rear speakers as well. Do you think it's a problem with my head unit not being able to drive the input current demands, or the sub amp receiving too much input voltage? Thanks.

try disconnection the rear speakers that you are tapped into and see if that helps, also, see if you have the speaker phase correct. does the amp have a phase switch to try out? is it on auto-sense turn-on, or did you connect into the head, ignition, or switch it manually?

that amp is pretty bare bones - nothing to really change on it

the factory deck doesn't like having the amp connected - maybe because the amp doesn't have differential inputs and it's grounding the negatives together.

i'd run a decent LOC until you can afford to upgrade the HU (something with auto turn-on as well). but even a $30 used HU would be worlds better than running the stock HU. even take a walk around your local salvage yard and pick up something used for like $10.

the LOC to buy:

Ah yeah I didn't think about the grounding. I'm gonna double check my wiring and make sure the phase is correct, and if it is I'll go pick up a LOC and post back here with my results.

I would look into a new hu too. I've got a loc for my sub and thought I'd be happy with it. I am for the sub, but now everything else is lacking plus I miss having my usb input with all my music on it. Eventually you'll want to change it out anyway. Even a cheap one from wal mart is better than the stock hu.
