line drivers

sorry newb question:

i have never had experiences with line drivers before and i was reading a thing about them and what i got was that it drove your signal inputs harder all the way up to whatever it is rated for ex. 11 volts(or has the ability to add that much) and then it allows you to turn your amps down. is all that right?

if so, why dont more people use them? if it lets you turn down your amp then its better all the way around isnt it?

Higher input voltage allows you to turn the gain down lower......but that will only help you if you have noise in your system. If you have no noise, you will not have any audible benefits from the higher voltage (and actually risk inducing noise and distortion into a noise free system due to adding another component to the chain)....so you actually risk more by adding a line driver to a noise free system then you do by running without one. Not to mention you are laying out more money for basically no increased benefits.

If you have an amp or system that's noisy with a higher gain setting, then yeah...it may help you.

my hu has 4v perouts and my amp can handle 8v.....(edit)when i turn the gain up it sound a whole lot better but there is a little bit of noise...i guess thats what it is, it doesnt really sound like distortion but i have to turn it way down to get rid of it. but i have a downfire box and i cant hear it when the box is sitting like it is supposed to....i can only hear it when i pull it up to try and change an amp setting and i have my ear up to it.
