Line drivers are usually not needed and rarely provide any audible gain. Back when source units had less than 1V nominal line outs (mid 90's and earlier) you would use some form of line driver to boost the RCA voltage and increase the signal to noise ratio of the RCA run. With current HUs having 2V (worst case) preouts, the s/n is already high enough to be inaudible. Boosting it further yields no gain. Additionally the line-driver itself is another component that you have to wire and another point at which you could create a ground loop and induce noise into the system.
