Larger Soundstage? (help..)

Alright, I am going to relocate my mids and tweets into custom doorpods (manual ******, no room for kicks). I have heard of systems that sound like the stage is outside the car due to the imaging. Are there any pointers on how to achieve this? Obviously T/A may have to be used, and it will vary with each vehicle, but what makes this happen? I want the stage to sound like it is wider than the car and coming from the hood area, rather than being a specific point on the dash. Do the sound waves reflecting off certain areas achieve this or what? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
