L7 15" louder than D2 15""?

Im on neither side, but i will say this.....its all in the install. Hearing a sub in a "sound room" at a shop is completely different then in a car...NEVER, EVER base your opinions on what you hear in a shop becaouse that WILL NEVER sound like that in a car.

It depends on what you want. A friend and I did a side by side comparison with a power hx2 12 and a magnum 12. The power hx2 hit a higher db score, but the mag sounded better. The l7's run almost neck and neck with power hx2's in spl so maybe that will answer your question a little bit. Basically if you want real loud with mediocre sq get the l7. If you want loud and good sq spend more and get the mag, good luck.

No matter what it always has to be a hard decision for some reason. I agree, with you, if you want jus a little bit of sound quality but a bass loud enough to make your ears bleed, then go with that L7. I'm sure the Magnum sounds better but not too sure if it could take a 15 inch L7 in spl. Of course though if you went with the L7 you could always seal the box and add a line driver to clear up the signal a bit.

That wasn't the only place I've heard them. I've heard them in people's cars too.

One of my closest friends has 2 12" L7's in a Bronco. I think those were the ones I talked about in my first post.

if i was to put the L7's in a sealed box, wouldnt they lose capability to make more spl? i thought that was what ported boxes were for. for spl. and sealed boxes, for sq. if thats true, i would think a magnum could keep up in spl numbers , it being ported, against a sealed l7...?

Ya ud lose a little, but ported boxes only up the ante on the DB's about 3 db's. It's noticeable, but it would still be very loud. Just put it in like a 3 to 4 cubic foot box.

It's not always true.

That is a very common blanket statement.

Some person/people must've heard some nicely setup sealed systems, and then heard some ported/vented setups that were tuned too high to come to that silly blanket statement.

BTW, one cannot just toss 12" 'woofer A' in ANY 12" sealed box and it be "SQ". There are more factors than just sealed=sq, and vented=spl.

IMO a ported/vented box tuned to 23-25hz would:

a) be noticeably louder than the sealed

b) be more efficient

&c) sound just as good as a sealed box throughout the audible bass frequencies.

**Keep in mind a-c is based upon the sealed and the vented boxes being optimum, or close to it.

This post is biased though,lol.

I hate sealed..hehehe

Same here, im not big on sealed either.
yeah, i happen to be partial to sealed. i need my sub to make up for a lack of midbass in my car, and i love when the sub slams those high notes rattling ur teeth out. something ported is not as good for.

ps - Sharks > teams on ur list in ur sig.

.... something ported is not as good for......
so your saying ported box would be good for "rattling your teeth on those high notes" or not. cus you started out by agreeing with this other guy about not liking enclosed boxes much, then saying, yea i like sealed.

anyways, back to the topic.... wouldn't a sub that doesnt have much sq, such as the L7, sound decent at medium volume? its not like your gonna have it alllll the way up everyday listening to it.. just makes me feel better about my subs, knowing that mines could get louder than whoevers... ya kno?

kid in my school has L7's and they loud as shit, they dont sound bad from the outside... and they're enclosed...

makes me wonder how em thangs should sound wit a nice ported box...

oh ya, this a lil bit off topic, but, how do yal know to how many hertz u should tune your box port to?

no a ported box is not good for the highs, its good for the lows. and when did i agree with someone saying i didnt like sealed boxes? i belive i said im partial to sealed boxes...

Install dependant....packerfan said it best, if it's not the install, it could be the 'listener' as everyone has their own opionions what sounds good and what doesn't....but they have won on both ends of the rhelm, SQ and SPL...

Just want to add a few things here.

Yes you can tune a sealed enclosure BUT its not universal like for ported. A ported enclosure tuned to 30hz is a tuned enclosure tuned to 30hz for any woofer, i guess you could take into account the difference in the actual woofer's displacement inside the enclosure but most are between .1-.2 so its not gonna make a big difference cept in REALLY small ported enclosures. But tuning a sealed enclosure is all subwoofer dependent. You can raise or drop the Q of the setup by "tuning" the enclosure size. Its kind of just a play on words, but basically I don't want someone to think that just sealing any woofer in a 1 cube enclosure is good. SOme subs like my sub takes around 7-8 cubic ft to get the same qtc as say a Elemental E12A which only needs 1 cube or so to get the same qtc.

And ported is NOT just for SPL, and sealed for SQ. most high end home audio subs are ported, and not just for SPL, if they just wanted SPL believe me these home audio guys have deep pockets, they could get 100 15" subs if they wanted to. But because it suits the woofer better. some woofers are actually better performers for SQ in ported applications. 1 such sub is the Focal Utopia subs. These are over $1000 each TOTALLY designed for SQ and nothing else. THEY DO NOT GET LOUD AT ALL, and they need a ported enclosure to sound balanced.

Balanced = better SQ
