just found out my sister has been stealing from me for gods knows how long

Its acceptable in our generation. There is no need to pay or earn if it isn't required.
Oh. I see.

I don't think that will work in the long term. The market requires an implicit trust for production to take place. The 21st century will indeed be interesting.

No, but this goes back to what I was saying earlier. So many different characteristics and what defines our actions as acceptable or not.
You, me, and 99% of the people on this site do the same thing. It's accepted in masses with a very minute chance of being caught. I download illegally, it's just how it is. It doesnt make me more or less of a person, it just means I'm a sheep following the masses and attempting to push it off as acceptable with the rest of the world.

What the girl did, however, is unacceptable - even by standards of weak-minded infidels.
You, and the girl, are both theifs. The only difference is the degrees of seperation between you and the victim. You can't see the victims of your crime, thus, you don't feel as bad about it.

Not me. My family provided as they should and showed me how to steal from others.
How to correct and why she stole has EVERYTHING to do with the family. To say contrary is illogical.
It may be that why she stole the money is due to the family, but it's not to say it's the family's fault. In her eyes, she may fully believe she DESERVES that money where she has been taught otherwise, so she rebelled and stole. We dont know her true motive other than she wanted the book and refused to ask for it, for some reason. That is a huge part of the argument that is missing.

The correction is completely up to the family. Should this go uncorrected, it might(or might not) affect the child's future decisions when it comes down to it. What you learn throughout your life directly affects what you choose to do later on down the road.

Thus the phrase "You live, You learn."

Essentially, that's very true. I'm not going to argue that.

Once again, how bad it's looked down upon depends on the eye of the beholder, and the masses. Althought it's stealing, if you are a 15 year old kid and your parents dont like your "free downloading" I seriously doubt you're getting a lecture simply for the fact that EVERYONE ELSE, **** near, does the exact same thing. We are all sheep. Maybe not in this instance, but in one way or another, we follow the flock.

No, we are not all sheep. I don't download music illegally.

I do, however, strip the DRM off music so I can listen to it on the player of my choice...so I break the law as well. But I ensure everyone in the value chain is adequately compensated.

It happens. We all do small things that are, in fact, unacceptable, just on a slightly larger or smaller scale. If people consistently just took money, and it was deemed acceptable, the OP would be pissed and the little girl would be fine. That is, also, if the parents were worthless and didnt give a shit what the girl was doing.

All I'm saying is that we all screw up. No one is perfect. The degree of how bad we screw up(and often we don't even remotely think about it...like downloading daily, for most of us) is based upon how the majority of people perceive our actions.

Most people perceive the girl as doing wrong with the parents in agreement to her wrongdoing - therefore she did wrong and will be punished. If the parents had raised their children otherwise the ish would go unpunished and we would all be telling the OP how shitty it was and how bad it sucked to have a horrible family instead of just a young, partially misguided/confused sister.
