i poop on you
the other night i was bored and figured i'd look for a second job for some extra change since im finding myself with extra time on my hands. i applied to a best buy in my area for the Car Audio Installer position. they called me today and asked me to come in tomorrow for an interview. Does anyone know how much i should expect on average and what the highest wage they've heard about for this kind of position is? i would never consider working at best buy but since its the car audio department im going to give it a shot and see what they have in store for me. if they're going to be paying me a crappy salary im not going to take the job. but if the pay is right ill take it. but i dont know what the average figures are.. im guessing it wont be that high since i hear they hire stupid zit-faced kids who really dont know the equipment that they sell/install.. but who knows maybe im an exception.. after all, im confident i know more than 90% of the installers that work at various BB and CC's (when it comes to car audio and electrical systems).. the only flaw i have as a car audio installer is that I'VE NEVER WORKED ON ALL KINDS OF CARS.. the majority of car audio systems i installed were hondas and acuras because all my buddies drive them.. LOL. but nonetheless i do great installs. im not expected to know how to take a random car apart as a car audio installer am i? i mean, don't they have books and resources for all kinds of cars in their shop? i wouldn't trust myself taking the dash apart in a car i never worked on unless i have some kind of guide or something.. any 411 would be greatly appreciated.. wish me luck!

Should be thinking about more than just what am I gonna get paid //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif. Think what are they gonna ask you, what am I gonna ask them. All I saw was...."how much will I make".

Do you have much work experience as an installer(through a busniess), certs, etc? If not, you're not gonna get dick and best buy will be about the only place to hire you. You don't like the pay, time to find a new job //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

BTW, Im sure you'll have more than one interview....at least at the one here.

I'd take it if I were you. May not be the best job in the world, but sometimes just gaining the experience working on different kinds of cars and different kinds of products is just as valuable as the money you could be making elsewhere because you can get a better job later on down the road with your new found knowledge.

im not going to be picky with the salary actually.. but if they say min. wage im hitting the road for sure.. and im not worried about the interview at all. my plan is to just go in there and be myself but at the same time, i plan to have a "cocky" attitude about my knowledge in car audio. but im not going to come off *** a know-it-all *******, i will TRY to emphasize that i know my car audio down to the "nitty gritty" and i will be honest about me not having hands-on on domestic vehicles and i will admit to them that i've never done fiberglassing or laid vinyl (if they ask) but i will emphasize i am a fast learner and already KNOW HOW to fiberglass and such, i just need to have the hands-on!!!

and do u guys think im hired definitiely if they call me and say i have an interview tomorrow? i found the ad for this job on monster.com and it was titled CAR AUDIO INSTALLER and i knew i had to apply.. im just worried that if i they hire me, they're going to say "OK now take this ford explorer's dash apart and re-run his wires and install these speakers and this CD player." i KNOW i can do that all easily, i just never took apart a ford explorer dash before!!! so my question is, does the best buy garage have like a giant reference book that shows how to take specific car interiors' apart? if so, i'm golden; i definitely have the knowledge (which is why i'm confident in the interview).. i just need the hands-on!!!

i'm not too sure about the gigantic tutorial on how to take apart dashes but if you have any questions i'm sure they have another installer their that will do your first few installs and give you any help you may need

do remember... some car audio places have more than one installer that works on a single vehicle to get it done faster... for example, the largest car audio shop around the new orleans area is a company called mobile1... when your system is being installed, an installer does the hu, another runs the wires, another does the fiberglassing, another mounts the amp, another builds the box, ...they all work together to get cars in and out and they do a damm good job at it... im not sure if bb or cc is like that but you shall find out

the problem with that is, all the time your gona kill and waste to go and look up how to take a car apart. wich there is no reference book probably anyway.

cars are not hard to take apart. just dont rush in to it, and get the right tools.

Just remember...just about everything inside a car can come out (especially if it is plastic). If you know that its held on by pannel clips dont be affraid to pull. Search for screws, those car company bastard engineers will hide a screw in the most non logical places. Belive me, in a few weeks you will gain the confidence.

Can't remember any previous ones, but the last two cars I've bought....When I bought the bracket/harness, one of them had a picture and listed locations of all screws/clips.

x2. i forgot to mention. the install kits, ie the dash kits, for all cars have a paper explaning how to take that car dash apart. etc. i know metra kits, best kits, have em. so you should be ok.

Yeah...IIRC BB uses Best Kits (Stinger Dash kits) and they have a sheet in there showing you how to take apart the dash. If they use METRA (which I prefer) they also have diagrams on how to remove a dash to install a CD player. Where you run into problems are older cars that dont have dash kits and you have to cut out the old Tape/Radio deck. Those get fun.

Dammn you Mike you beat me. Oh and just a question what kind of install acc. do you use at your shop Metra or Best kits? and what Wire do yall use Tsunami, Stinger, Street wires..etc

You're sounding a little cocky considering you have no experience installing professionally. Taking apart dashes and having a vast knowledge of multiple cars is pretty important. Someone who is guessing on whether or not a panel snaps off is a liability.

I don't think you'll have an issue learning, but you're not going to be welcome if they get the same vibes from you.
