I just went thru that long ***.....why the W7 hate thread. Well, so I can get my point out there withou everyone going thru 10 pgs.....I started my own thread. Basically JL subs are expensive, but.....you pay for what you get. Its like buying a Benz or BMW......you pay for the design, the patents, the engineering and aesthetics....along with everything else that goes into building a one of a kind sub. I see some of these other companies touting their subs and I see the same dayum subwoofer I see all over the internet with fly by night companies. I see the same frames, cones, tinsel leads.....basically the same parts from the same shop and the same build......just with a different name stamped on it. Why the hell would that sub cost as much as a JL, or Kicker or Alpine, or some of the better subs??? Of course you will get a loud, plain looking, cookie cutter sub. If thats what you want, then pay alot less for it. You dont expect to snag a Benz for Chevy Impala cash do you? The chevy can be has with leather, power everything and all that, but you will see those same parts on all GM cars. The Benz is gonna cost more because of everything that goes into it. This is just an analogy, so dont flame. Anyhow, I think JL and (some of the other companies) charge more for their subwoofers because more went into them. There.....this IMHO.

Have a great day.

i see your point, but the fact still remains that better subwoofers can be purchased for a lower price. i mean, the w0's sold for like $120, and for that price you could get 2 memphis power references, etc.

I do understand what you are saying.....but, if you look at the new W1, it has many more patents and custom parts than the Memphis sub. The memphis sub is a more typical sub, easier to develope and build.........//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

if i can pay half as much for a sub that looks like shit but sounds great and is as loud as shit id do it. Dont see much point in spending more than i have 2. Im not hating on jl they have nice product

.....and thats good. I just wanted to throw in my .02 cents why JL does cost more. Its the same reason you pay $60K for a Benz instead of 2 Accords for $30K each.

Big deal it has some patents and custom parts, but if you can purchase a less expensive driver that will sound just as good, if not better, why not? Simplicity is the key, why make a overcomplicated driver that has a higher probability of something going wrong. Take a mathmatical equation for instance.

Option A: 4x+3=15 solve for x.

Option B: 2+x=5 solve for x

Therefore, With option A representing JL audio, and option B representing Memphis. Option B is clearly more simple and yeilds the same result. Option B also has better reliablity because the probability of human error is greatly reduced because there are less steps involved to solving the problem.

Option A: 4x+3=15 solve for x.

Option B: 2+x=5 solve for x

A: X=3

B: X=3

you crazy kids and your crazy math! I think JL makes an excellent product and has productively built thier image and reputation to position themselves as a premium brand in car audio, and thusly charges at the top of the price spectrum- because people will pay it despite whether the top quality is actual or percieved. Why do people buy Tommy Hillfiger jeans instead of Arizona brand? the exact same reason. I have owned several JL subs over the years and have always been satisfied with the product, and have recommended it, but in the top echelon of products it really comes down to individual preference. I know a lot of people wouldn't want a Dls Iridium like I have because the cone is completely plain with no logo or anything, but I bought it based on the sound. The sub is beautifully made, with wondeful machining etc.- and I happily stuffed all of that into a sealed fiberglass box never to be seen again. That's my $0.02

Realize one thing...the W7 is still a woofer. It'll blow as frequently as any other quality made woofer. Not only do you pay for the aforementioned reasons (patents/R&D..), you are made to pay an unreasonable amount of money for a fix/ recone because of it as well- and from what i hear these fees would actually buy you a whole new sub from another comparable manufacturer. It simply does not make sense for some consumers, and its understandable.

While I keep seeing the W7 being touted as an SQ woofer, its obvious of what big differences reside in the notion of Sound quality vs a sub that sounds good.

While the W7 may be a linear beast, it may produce effortless smooth bass, no mechanical noise, etc... doesnt mean squat to me if I dont feel tonally it can reproduce instrumental bass, in a transparent manner... the way that I can admire in lesser priced underhung woofers. Now I never expected a woofer to be perfect, but dear lord... if a company is going to label that sub as an SQ woofer, and price it where they do- i expect nothing less than sonic perfection- SQL subs are a dime a dozen that handle much more thermally, who needs one at that price...

The point as to why it is HYPE. Those patents and such are doing NOTHING to make it superior, they are only there to help it sell better. I will never buy a JL sub for any application unless I get extreme discounts. They just are not worth my time or money. Stupid *** cone/dustcap cracks and the retarded surround just gets slit like a brotha in prison. Worthless unless you have a reason.
