JL Componet RMS

I have the JL XR 650 componet set which is rated at 70watts RMS as a set. On the Rec amp power it says 70-150 RMS. My question is that when you see the tweeter sold seperately the RMS of that tweeter is 70 watts and I assume the midbass is about the same assuming that they are crossed over correctly. So as a set tehy should be able to handle 140watts RMS, since by themselves they can handle 70 watts. thoughts??

Wrong, the numbers aren't additive.........if they can both handle 70 watts, then as a pair they can only handle 70 watts. When you have components sets with passive crossovers, the power from the amp isn't split between them. If you have a 70 watt amp, then each speaker is going to receive 70 watts (assuming they are the same impedence). If you are sending 70 watts @ 4ohm to the component set, and the mid is 4ohm and the tweeter is 8ohm, then the mid will receive 70 watts but the tweeter will only recieve 35 watts.

It isn't a power distrobution, it's a frequency response thing. Let's pretend theoretically that we are running 70 watt amp full range. That amp (again, theoretically) puts out 70 watts at all frequencies, correct?? Now, pretend that we are running that amp to a component set with a passive crossover, with a crossover point of 3500hz. So, we are taking that full range signal from the amp and splitting up the frequencies between the mid and tweet at 3500hz. Now, since we are splitting the frequencies and nothing else, there is still going to be 70 watts worth of energy at all frequencies below the crossover point, and all frequencies above the crossover point, just the same as there was before we split the signal (since it was putting out 70w at all frequencies).

Make sense?? That's about the best I can explain it.

 
When you bi-wire, it's just like hooking any other speaker to the amp. If you bi-wire a 4-channel amp to a component set with all 4ohm drivers, then each channel will see a 4ohm load. If you bi-wire a 4-channel amp to a component set with 4ohm mids and 8ohm tweets, then the channels powering the mids will see a 4ohm load and the channels powering the tweets will see an 8ohm load.

 
to squeak.. so for example, i have cdt cl-62, it says they handle 150 watts rms. i have a memphis audio 3004 amp (150 watts X 2 @ 4 ohms) to power them (not hooked up yet).. are you saying that the cdts can only handle 75 watts a piece, 150 as a pair? i dont want to fry them..

Assuming CDT didn't pull an Audiobahn, then each speaker should be able to handle the full rated RMS power.
