JL Audio W7/ W6 choosing

Most people like the sound of the W6v2 better than the W7. From a measured response standpoint, the W7 is the superior driver. Significantly less distortion. That lower distortion is what most people don't like about it.
Your posts are always right on.

For those of you considering the IDMAX and the W7 be carefull with the opinions you get online...sure JL is hyped in the real world but online company's like Image Dynamics and other small company's are way overhyped online to new comer's looking for advice.

The IDMAX is more comparable to the W6v2 and the w6 is built a hell of alot better and is more linear, they both handle about the same amount of power (with the w6 being more linear even with 1000 watts)...don't always' look at the specs as they are misleading depending on the manufacture ID's rating I have found is about the max you would want to go while JL's rating is underrated to accomodate the abuse it will get from it's mainstream buyer's.

The w7 is in a class of it's own just make sure you have a stout midbass to accomodate it...if you don't have the midbass support an IDMAX or W6 will work better in the install. btw. I have owned the all the subs mentioned in my post and currently use the w6's.

W7s are very nice... of you can afford it... get it... I've had an IDmax and I've had 2-10w7s 1 12w7 1 13w7.. also have had about 5o other woofers...(TC9 based TC3k based, TC underhung, W6v2s, FI BL and Q, 05 RE XXX and HC and SEs etc etc...) and in my honest opinion I think that the 12w7 I had of a PG Xenon 1200.1 was and is my favorite sounding sub I have ever owned... had it in a 1.5" thick 1.5cuft sealed box... LOVED it... and I'm getting another one soon... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I have just never heard another woofer that sounds similar.. its just different.. and I'm willing to pay to have that sound again...

JL's sound good but man I tell ya their build quality ***** on their subs. I have had quite a few and all of them come apart at some point specially driven hard.
Don't drive them past their limits, pretty simple. Any sub is going to fail eventually if you drive it hard a lot. I myself don't use but maybe 1" worth of excursion on my sub 99% of the time, and I've never blown/ruined anything...ever.

So your telling me that the 13W7 I had running off a 1000/1 should not have fallen apart after 6 months. The spider broke loose from the frame! But yet it did. I had 3 10" W3's running off a PPI amp back in the day and all 3 dust covers came off and the paper surrounds all fell off. They are built like crap. I have had my DD9515 running 2400 daily for 2yrs. And have never once had a problem. Maybe I just had bad luck with JL but still I think they sound good but built like ****.

If they were crappily built, you'd be hearding a lot more stories such as yours. You either:

a) got unlucky with factory defected subs on one or more occasions(unlikely)

b) push your stuff harder than the average JL user does, causing you to have a higher rate of failure

c) didn't know the physical limits of the subs

d) combo of two/three of these

And yes, it would be very easy to blow a W7 with a 1000/1...very easy. The DD is made to handle a ton of abuse because it's a spl sub that they know it going to get beat on to death. It has a very stiff suspensions that is hard to drive past it's limits. It sounds like that's what you were always wanting and you were trying to get that out of the JL stuff that isn't built to handle a ton of abuse.
