JL Amps Shutting Off.. Why?

Has anyone experience 5-10 second amp shut offs with JL amps?

This is my set up:

1000/1v2 JL AMP

450/4v2 JL AMP

2x - 10w3v2 JL SUBS

165 k2p Focal Component Speakers

165 cvx Focal Coaxial Speakers

Any time I blast the radio they would shut down for about 5 to 10 seconds, some times it's just the voices and not the bass, some times it's both. I've done the following to narrow down the causes..

-I've lowered the bass all the way down, happens less often while still blasting the radio, and when I say blasting, I mean clean sound, not distored noise.

-I could blast the bass and transfer sound to either front or rear speakers and amps shut off either after a while or at a higher listening level.

-Shut down sub amp completely via radio and could blast voices as high as the radio goes and the amps wouldn't shut off.

-Amps shut off more often with headlights on, and/or A/C on.

I was told by an associate at sound advice that this could be an electrical issue, and that this could be a sudden voltage drop of under 11volts which could shut off the amps and that a capacitor could fix this.

It was brought to my attention that it could be heat but I got into my car earlier today after my car being parked for 4 hours, in a garage, in a shaded area. I took of the panel behind my seat to allow air to circulate the amps as I drove with my windows down and the amps shut off after 10 minutes once I got it up to speed and wanting to listen to it loud.

What do you guys think?

OH, I drive a 2008 350z if that helps.. stock battery too.

try changing your ground my 500/1 and my 500/5 did the same thing also if your using a head unit with more than 2 volts of output flip the switch from low input to high input and reset your gains

Thanks for the quick reply!

Well anyway,

I'm using a iva-w505 headunit; has 2v preouts..

Might be the ground, but it was installed my sound advise, I really hope they know how to ground a system! My system is being powered by 4 guage wires and grounds.

It's most likely your ground. I'm sure they picked a shitty spot. And depending on your length of wire, 4g is pushing it for 1450RMS. 2g+ would be better.

To test the ground you could take a run of 4g from the front bat negative to the amps and see if it doesn't shut off. You should also get a DMM if you don't have one to see what your voltage is doing under heavy loads. But as said, you'd be best off upgrading to a larger wire size. 1/0 is the next common step up.

like jrwalte said 1/0 is a good step in the right direction maybe check your fuse also if they didnt use a large enough fuse it mite cause a few problems big 3 upgrade would help do a search for big 3 also

if u got it installed at a shop, take it back.

THey should fix the problem for free, or will suggest something to help out.

From this info, sounds like u have to low of voltagte for those amps. First upgrade the wire to some 0/1 gauge.

IF that doesnt solve any issues. DO they big 3 in 0/1 gauge.

Now if that doesn fix the issue, new deep cycle up front or new deep cycle in the back.

LAst but not least, if still no fix, time for a new HO alt

Thanks alot guys! Well, I'm going to the install shop later on today and I'll have them diagnose the problem, I just really hope they don't offer me a cap and then I still have the same shut off problem..

Thats what I was thinkin, did you check the status light and see what kind of failure it was. If I remeber right the JL's have a low voltage and low impedance light. Which one is on when they shut off?

A Cap will not help you.

Thanks to everyone who has given they're input on the subject, I highly appreciate your help! Yesturday I took the car back to Sound Advice and they found that the fuse between the battery and the distributor was loose! Lol, I was like wtf? That was the last thing on my mind as it never really turned off on bumps but it did for the tech guy! I'm just really happy I didn't have to spend another penny on my sound system!

Lol! Seriously! With gas prices at almost $4.50 a gallon (ultimate) around here, but naw.. it was on my way back from work yesturday so it wasn't too bad..

Hello evereyone!!!!! I just installed my jl 500/1 in my 2001 Acura 3.2CL still using my stock H/U with a hi/lo converter and It sounds great .... till you reach a certain volume my sub just stops(1 kicker L7 12 inch) the amp stays on and doesn't give any warning light until I lower the volume than it comes back. also im using a 2.0 farad cap w a digital readout and the volts seem to be fine not sure ..... Help I posted here since this is a JL Amp prob thread
