Jl 500/1 issues

Well this has me confused as hell. I have the amp hooked up to a 12w7 all 4ga. for grounds and power, the ground is hooked up to a seatbelt bolt. 12ga. for the speaker wire. I also have a cap hooked up in there.

Alright well the problem came about when i had everything turned up pretty good, doors shaking etc., the cap said it had about 11.9 volts going through it and then all the sudden it started beeping and the volts started dropping clear down to 8 which by then the sub had stopped, the amp had shut off due to the low voltage and the cap soon did too.

I turned everything down to see if it would just charge back up....nothing. I got a voltmeter and started checking. First around the battery, before and after the fuse on the power wire, 12.8 volts (car turned off). So i then checked what it said at the cap and it said it was only getting 2.7 volts to it so i unhooked the wires from the cap thinking maybe somethin went wrong with it. I checked both wires before i even put them in the amp to make sure about both of them and it said 12.8 volts. But once i hooked them into the amp, it dropped to 2.7 volts on the voltmeter. I also did the same stuff with the car on and the volts just changed up to like 5 when they were in the amp. Can anyone help?

to me... you have ground issues... check your ground... it has happened to me before.

agreed i would check for a solid ground ... it is possible it may be internal.. we have seen a couple of 500/1's brought in brand new by customers in the past month that has issues as well.. wonder if maybe a bad batch of amp. i saw another on here and on other forums as well... makes me wonder

I would try and isolate the problem. If you can't find a wiring problem. Try to just connect the amp with one sub. Leave out the cap. Cut your gains down. See what happens, monitor your voltage. If this works, then start adding back one device at a time until the problem returns. If the problem didn't occur again, start adjusting your gains up again.

Maybe this will help pinpoint the problem.

i had two 500/1s go bad on me. same problem, powered up but no output. i have heard dealers say that sometimes they have shipped back 30 a month that had problems or doa's.

Hey i have that problem too, powered up but no output. Im wondering do you still have output after you turn off your car for a good 30mins. OR does it power on and no output period.

mine were just dead as can be. no matter how long they were on for it wouldnt have any output. both 500/1s went out in my truck at different times. i think they look ok from the outside, but quality control from JL leaves something to be desired.

ok, then maybe something is wrong with my wiring and not my amp that is defective.

i'm one of teh biggest JL dealers on the west coast and I can honestly tell you i've probably sent back maybe 2 500/1s in the last 9 months. most dealers cant even sell 30 in a quarter.

ive seen a few now but not 30 of them... a few other dealers i know have complained of more recent problems though not sure why ill have to ask them now. i dont carry them.. just my experience from brand new ones brought in to be installed...

k thanks yo. i hope when i get back to Canada and sand off my ground my problems will be fixed. I REALLY hope it aint the amp. I dont even know what Id do if I find out it is the amp. Stupid eBay.

in a quarter. amn, you dont sell shit. my zapco dealer probably pushes 15+ amps week.
