Prior to the mid '70s, that wouldn't have sounded weird at all. Hertz as a unit of frequency really only gained traction in the '60s, and took until the '70s to displace cycles per second.

That was done because people shortened "cycles per second" to just "cycles", which is also incorrect. "Kilocycles" is a count of cycles, "kilocycles per second" is a frequency.
And it annoyed my teachers to no end, since Hertz wasn't a major influence in the physics world.
