Is this being done wrong?

Hey guy I'm setting up my new sub in my car, while adjusting the gain control on the amp it is acting really weird. If I turn the gain all the way up then the ac voltage read by the MM drops. what could be wrong with here?

Can you hear if the amp is going into clipping?

JimJ, the sub is not hooked up but when I hook it up and adjust it close to where I think it should be it sounds fine. As far as the amp I can hear anything from it and it doesn't feel too hot either.

its probally clipping so leave the gains down if ya want louder buy a bigger amp

Also could this be a grounding issue?

Probably not a grounding issue. Just set it by ear and then measure the voltage with the subs still connected. If it is less then what you figured it should be, then you probably aren't clipping and have nothing to worry about.
