Is this a decent amp??

Do you have any objective measurements showing Sony amplifiers outputting significantly less than rated power output?
They are pretty much everywhere. If you cant find one then the fact that they are cheap plastic made in in China that break every few months and have horrible shitty quality sure would be enough to scare me away. Like I want melted plastic all over my trunk.

Good question... But in fact a large majority of Sony car audio is indeed quite overrated. Just isnt what Sony is in other Electronics segment.

Really? Because the few objective measurements I can find are as follows;

http://pasmag.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=367&Itemid=104

Rated:

50W x 4 into 4Ω

60W x 4 into 2Ω

50W x 2 + 120W x 1 (3-channel mode)

Measured:

53.1 W/ch @ 4Ω

74.2 W/ch @ 2Ω

73.1W x 2 @ 2Ω + 157.1W bridged @ 4Ω (3-channel mode)

http://www.caraudiomag.com/testreports/0109cae_sony_xm_1502sx_car_amplifier/index.html

Rated:

150 watts x 2 @ 0.04% THD

380 watts x 1

Measured:

195 watts x 2 @ 1.0% THD

344 watts x 1 @ 12.6V

http://www.carsound.com/artman2/publish/amplifiers/Sony_XM-D500X_299.shtml

Rated:

250w @ 4ohm

500w @ 2ohm

Measured:

346W @ 4 Ohms

553W @ 2 ohms

The PasMag review seems to be of a pretty current product from the Sony lineup (still available @ Crutchfield), the other 2 are older but still within what most consider to be Sony's "crap years".

So, again......where are the objective measurements showing Sony are horrendously overrated? Because from the reputable objective measurements I can find, they appear to meet and exceed "RMS" power ratings.

As an aside; That slim Sony also had flat frequency response out well beyond both ends of the audible spectrum, and the mono tested by carsound had an impressive efficiency of 90% @ 4ohm & 84% @ 2ohm (full power).

Figure 1 - Power

Load Supply V Supply Current Power Efficiency 1/3 Efficiency

4Ω 13.14 33 Amps 53.1 W/ch 49% 35%

2Ω 12.99 45 Amps 74.2 W/ch 51% 30%

Looks like those numbers were at 13.14 volts.

The THD is pretty ugly though.

isn't some Sony CEA rated?...just look at their actually RMS specs and they should be legit.

just cause they paint 2000 WATTS on the front of the amp, and rate it at 50 watts RMS doesn't mean that it wont really do what its rated for.

Those specs dont say what the voltage was. Probably some where at 16v or higher. At the standard voltage in a car you wont see anything close to that.

Are you serious?? What reputable reviewer conducts bench testing at higher than 14.4V //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Regardless of the idiocy involved in that statement.........

Pas Mag states the voltages in the review (13.14 & 12.99, respectively)

Car Audio mag states the mono output figure is @ 12.6V, and given industry standards it's reasonable to assume the stereo figures are 14.4V or less (the full article might say, but I don't have access to the magazine version)

Car Sound states in the review it was tested at 14.4V

So, again, where are these objective measurements showing Sony is horrendously overrated //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
