Type Rs are still awesome subs, they were teh shit for a loooong time in these forums. Good SQ, good output, cheap price, and they can handle way more than they're rated.

SQ is subjective. To me the Type R isn't suited for playing music at all, but to each their own.

Depends on what you're looking for. I can think of many woofers that mop the floor with Hype Rs in the SQ department, and a great many that get louder than Hype Rs assuming you're giving them rated power. Again, YMMV.

No doubt the problem isn't the subwoofer itself- just the hype and annoying fanboys surrounding it. Similar to JL- Alpine does make some decent (even good) quality stuff. Problem is, there are a lot of people that assume they make the best stuff. Another aspect is the fact that if you do get type-rs, no matter where you are- someone else already has a pair. But if you can live with yourself owning the same equipment as the kid down the street- so be it.

I'm not about to delve into what that woofer means to you on an emotional level; but I believe if it did what's been claimed of it, you wouldn't need to defend it.

I will never have an Alpine Type R permanently installed in my vehicle. I wanted to believe the hype, but then I listened to one. That is my opinon. An opinion is never an absolute, so take it as you will.
