Is my amp going into protect? WHY would it do this?

So I just bought a used JL 250/1 to push my old 12w6. It works well except when im playing at high volumes (30/35 on head unit) the sub/amp will cut out every once and a while...and wont turn on til i turn it down. it is wired to 3ohms.

This seems odd to me because I have the gain set at less than half way (10-11 o'clock position) and on my head unit I have the subwoofer setting to 0.

Any ideas on what could be going on? I think im going to set my gain with a DMM tomorrow...just dont know where to get 60hz test tone or whatever it is you need.

Basically does this sound fishy to anyone? need to know if I should return the amp or if you think the amp is fine.
