Inverting Subs DOES Matter!

I love these threads where everyone is getting pissed because they are right! I don't know if inverting a sub changes it's sound, I have not personally tried it as I think it looks gay. Phase does matter- in my car I have to constantly change the phase of my sub and I have it crossed over really low (63 hz) and still run into cancellation issues with some music in the midbass region, however reversing the subs phase brings out the midbass at the sacrifice of low-end punch/extention. That is my experience anyway. My advice is to do what sounds and looks best to you. I am a believer in function over form- I would rather is sound right than look nifty with shiney magnets in the air, but your tastes may vary. Lets all just remember this is supposed to be fun......I think it is cool you wanted to try something to see if you liked it better. It didn't cost you anything more than time. The thing about experimentation is sometimes it doesn't work out and you can't go back to the way it was because it was better before. This is not one of those times.

Yes your right it does. But the quote I went against said nothing bout the rest of the system. It just said that basically if you take one sub and switch the polarity on it that you will get a different sound. WHICH YOU WONT.
And to dig into what you said a little deeper. How can two octaves be that close to each other? You realize one octave is a measure of one frequency being exactly double onother? And you are talking bout people having the front stage playing the same as the sub bass so we will take a higher sub bass frequency. say 100hz. one octave from it will be 200 hz. How can those be close? Also taking that same frequency they wave is about 11 feet long. So if you think about it if a sub is in the trunk and your midbass is in the front door your looking at about a 5 foot difference. Which would put your system out of phase anyway. So guess what you've got cancellation just from placement. But that is just where your subs and midbass frequencies meet. But for your sub bass in or out of phase would not cause a problem. Even if you did have your midbass playing down to 20hz the size of the created wave would not be enough to cause an audible cancellation in the subs wave. even if they were 180 deg. of each other.
Play a 50Hz and 100Hz tone on top of each other out of phase.

I was referring to cancellation of frequencies that are played by both the sub and mids. If I switch the polarity on my sub it sounds much weaker because I get cancellation of upper bass.
Completely correct; if you reversed the phase of the two subs, you have either:

1. Caused a null at the crossover point

2. Filled a null at the crossover point

Whether it's 1 or 2 depends upon what you originally had...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif But there is definitely a change at the crossover point, and that will be audible.

If you reverse mount your subs, you need to reverse the phase of the subs to maintain the same overall system phase you had with the subs normally mounted.

i know im going to get flamed for this, so my M3 is inverted and i only have one. i turned my head unit to revesersed polarity. some are sayin i dont need to while others are saying it. will it damage the speaker if i dont?

nope not at all, you use the phase to make it blend better with the rest of your set up.

it is common to have your front mids out of phase from each other, why? because car acoustics ****, its a horrible enviroment for good clean sounding audio, it can be done but is very difficult to get it sounding really really good, you need to take in alot of thought to do it right

No possibility for damage exists. It's solely to achieve the best sonic performance with the rest of the system. Try the polarity both ways, see which sounds better (this is regardless of mounting, inverted or regular doesn't matter.....always try the polarity both ways and see which sounds better)

Alright, so everyone says inverting your subs dosent matter, it will sound exactly the same as if it wasent inverted, well whoever said that is completely wrong. I inverted my subs today and theyre QUIETER then they were normal style, but seem to be punchier, more accurate if that makes any sense? Theyre definately quieter though and dont seem to hammer the low lows as well
You made a stupid statement based on qualitative observations. You can't make a statement declaring it sounds, "QUIETER" If you don't have quantitative data (i.e. TL meter) to support your statement. You probably think it's quieter because you want to approve your own hypothesis so badly, your brain makes it true.
