so theres a guy by me that needs some help installling a head unit in a porsche 911 c4s 2004 (996 body).

he said its a bose system connected with fiberoptic to the rest of the car. is this similar to on like a home theater system, like an optical cable or what? im not sure if id have trouble with this or if its just some fancy terms for like a simple cable that needs to be unplugged from the stock unit and plugged into the aftermarket HU.

and being that i havent actually seen the car yet, does anybody know if this dash is gonna be a ***** to take apart to get to the HU or should it be relatively straight forward ?

any help is appreciated

If you don't even know how the wiring is set up, I would not suggest attempting an install on a 60k plus car. If he has that car, He can afford a reputable shop to get his system in it.

The fiberoptics system means that a lot of the car's electrical will stop operating correctly if you remove the factory head unit, afaik.

You either have to install it in a second location, running a complete new stereo system in the car, or you have to use an LOC for the amplifiers.

I wouldn't be messing with this at all, it's not a simple unplug and replug in the new HU.

thanks a lot guys. i figured it wasnt gunna be simple, thats why id ask first. idk just the idea of doin something on a porsche sounded like it could be fun, but i dont feel like messing anything up.

Great idea, but yeah, it's NOT worth messing something up. Every part in those dang things cost you way more money than you'd think, same along with the BMW's, lexus's, etc.

using a loc is the really the only way to add amps. my jag (thats for sale - send a pm if interested 2004 X-type) has a fiber optic system as well and i wanted a little more low end. i had to use a loc to get a signal to the subs and amp i installed.

X2 I have done research for a Porsche boxster and even that is going to be complex. The battery is in the back under the rear fender and the trunk in the front is not as easy to get to as you think. On top of that if he dose want to change the head unit no one that I have seen makes a wiring harness for it. "but I have only looked for 4 days now" All and all if you do not know what you are doing or know the risks involved DO NOT DO IT

i just talked to him. he said he heard the same thing with the fiberoptic system and he said its hard as hell to change like anything on the car. he still wants help installing a gps so i might give him a hand with that once i figure out what brand/ where he wants it mounted and the rest of the specifics. i think hes more of a DIYer just looking for a hand thats why hes not bringing it to a reputable shop.

This vehicle is another vehicle featuring the MOST system. That is the fiberoptic cable being referred too. If i recall the radio can be removed with out issue as the only thing in the fiber optic loop is the bose amplifier. However the amplifier would need to be bypassed as the inputs are obviously fiber optic so integration is out of the question. I dont recall off the top where the amplifier is but im all but positive it is in the rear drivers side of the interior somewhere. And the radio will take a vw harness for power ign and ground

im gunna talk to the guy again and see what he says. im not sure if he wants to add another amplifier at this pint so im gunna suggest it and see what he says.
