The HDC3 is not the best option. Listening to rock, he doesn't need that. Also, its a big heavy sub. He's going to need a big amp for that. It would be a waste of money if he didn't get a big amp.
The hds2 series is weak, but would be fine on a couple hundred watts.
Kicker is terrible though. Bottom line.
More than you want to spend. Don't get an HDC3.
I would completely disagree with you on that. Rock sounds better then it ever had with the punch the hdcs have. But i would agree that the HDCs are overkill.
That thing looks ridiculous lol. I'm not trying to level houses when I drive by lol. The kicker CVX 12 i was looking 0at is between $150 and $200.I'd need a much bigger and more expensive amp as well no?
Unlike other nuthuggers I'll tell you straight up that you will not like any soundqubed sub if you are gonna stick it in a prefab or sealed, you'll absolutely hate it. Those subs need a real box or else it'll sound like crap. They arent engineered to perform well in sealed boxes either its basically custom ported or bust with these subs. If you are set on sealed or prefabs, stick with other options.
You will be fine with two lower powered efficient 12s. Hit up craigslist for subs either type Rs, JL audios, kicker comps, kenwoods, just check back with us before you buy. Despite my dislike for kicker, They arent bad subs, if you can get it for dirt cheap, they are mediocre but they will work fine for your music preferences since they focus on music above 40hz. Lot of guys in here are all about the lows and rock does not have close to the amount of lows thats needed to enjoy low frequency tuned ported subs. You dont need 1000+ watts to have a good sounding subwoofer system geared for rock.
There is absolutely no sense in you buying new speakers running it on head unit power, It will barely sound like 5% better than your stock speakers. If you wanted to go this route, You need a good head unit(VERY FKING IMPORTANT). The head unit you chose is sub par at best. You will need to sound treat your doors and cover up large holes and gaps turning the door into a speaker enclosure. Along with Lots of power to bring out any potential the speaker has. Nothing can be compromised, you need all aspects covered for this route.
What I would recommend you getting is a scrapping all plans for head unit/speakers and get a JBL MS-8 DIgital sound processor. It'll sound WORLDS better then whatever combo you are putting together EVEN with your stock speakers. It has an onboard amp to power speakers better than a head unit would and stage/imaging/EQ technology that will make your music sound beyond amazing even with stock speakers.
Willing to bet 100 bucks that a system with stock speakers on an MS-8 will sound better than what you are going for now.
