I'm putting together a complete system.

The HDC3 is not the best option. Listening to rock, he doesn't need that. Also, its a big heavy sub. He's going to need a big amp for that. It would be a waste of money if he didn't get a big amp.

The hds2 series is weak, but would be fine on a couple hundred watts.

Kicker is terrible though. Bottom line.

And how much for an amp to power that monster?
More than you want to spend. Don't get an HDC3.

That's my bad, for some reason I thought I was linking to HDS. This is the right link and good price:

SoundQubed HDS310

If you must cut corners, cut these:
1. Get a nicer front stage set and leave off rear fill for now.

2. Get 1 nicer woofer instead of 2 crappier ones.
agrred, get a nice pair for a little more expensive for your front, add to the back later, or do waht i did and by EVERYTHING at once

Amazon.com : SoundQubed HDS208-D2 600W RMS 2.5" Coil : Car Electronics

Will this provide the same sound as the Kicker comps in that box?

Well If I can save money in other places, I can spend more in others. Saving 100 on the subs will let me put more into the front and rear speakers

Don't buy rear speakers for now. You can go for the 8" version of that sub, but the HDS2 has lower power handling. Keep in mind you can buy them directly from the soundqubed.com site as well. Are you limited in trunk space? What kind of a box will you be putting it in?

Btw I have 2 buddies that are running the HDS300 subs. Both didn't want to spend a lot and both are super happy with it. One has the 12" in a box custom built for it...output is insane. Another just wanted to add extra bass, has the 10" in a small ported prefab - does just right, not too much. Those subs are definitely versatile. If you get the HDS, you can always put it in a better box later, throw more power at it, and suddenly you have a hard hitting system.

I meant to put up the 12, which is oddly cheaper.

I can tell you that the 10" we have in a cheap prefab box off 1200W sounds very decent, definitely nothing crazy, but it's definitely worth it. If you every get the itch later and have the funds, you can throw it into a box built to spec for a considerable improvement. As to how it'll sound compared to the kicker, I can't say. For all intensive purposes, it's a much better sub than the kicker.
