I'm completely lost on what size/type router bit to use

I'm wanting to put 1/4" plexi on 1/2" MDF false floor to show the amps underneath. I have an older Craftsman router, but I have NO idea what type/size tip to use? I've never used a router in my life, so this will be a laerning experience. I've seen alot about rabbeting bits, and those seem to be what I need, since they help guide along whatever surface I'm cutting? Or do I use spiral bits? Help...need to make it to HD before close tonight.
