If JL is good but overpriced, at what price point should they be?

better is quite subjective.
I agree about the bashing JL because it's too expensive. That is a silly argument.

WE agree

But understanding the dynamics of how transshipping hurts the industry...that is something I like to explore in greater detail. There is so much to the retail side I do not know.
very basic retail economics. retailers buy product from the manufacturer, for the most part retailers have stock (also means they have the overhead of a shop). the manufacturer proctects their product for many reasons. holds product value, protects the dealers from having to have price wars ect.. when you remove a dealer agreement from the sale (advertise to sell under map) you break your agreement and would probably lose your right to buy new product to sell. the places selling transhipped gear to meet any dealer agreements and sell it for however much they want. being that the manufacturer didnt make the sale they can't varify the product for its qualty authanticity and refuse warranty to protect its dealers. also you shouldnt hate on your local shop, generally if you let them know you are really wanting to buy something and you can get a better deal on line they will do the best that they can. nothing wrong with that type of business at all best of all it keeps your money in your area. also if you go into a shop with a chip on your shoulder and act overly "they have to earn my business" just remember this, they are trying to to business the right way and they have THOUSANDS of dollars invested in where they are at. that is an investment in being there quite a bit more so than someone opening up a web page or an ebay account and selling items for dealer cost or near dealer cost. all their investment is on a web page, a picture and or an ebay listing. a lot of those places dont even have the product and dont go get it until after you have paid. i dont blame people for getting somethings on the net but you should always try and at least see what you can get local

It is not at all about the consumer going in with a chip on his shoulder. What it is about is that the retailer needs to appreciate that, at least with respect to a certain segment of the population, they can no longer sit back with a take it or leave it attitude. They do, in fact, have to earn that business if they want it.

Quite frankly, I am not convinced that retailers care if they lose that segment of the business. As I said earlier, they seem satisfied in targeting the "low hanging fruit" -- those customers that have no idea how things should be done and only care about getting loud no matter how shitty it sounds.

thanks dude, if I did not find the focal woofers at a steal of a price, I would have put some JL woofers in there
You deserve it. I have heard one set of Focal subs (no idea what model) and they sounded great. Ironically, the sales guy at that shop was very well informed. Maybe the only one that I have met that I felt that really knew what he was talking about. In fact, I was just about to pull the trigger on a set of Focal components from there, but then I met the guy who actually does the installs and he was a complete idiot. Perhaps I should have asked the sales guy if there was a more experienced installer, but I was not sold on the idea of Focal comps in the first place. I only thought about it because of how much I liked the sales guy.

word. the two people I worked with at my shop were pretty intelligent with sales and some installing. I had more skill with the more custom work, I just wish there was more of a market for that kinda work in my town. I ended up being the alarm, etc. specialists. and what ever custom work we did do I "helped"

I never really liked focal (mainly components) was probably because our only "competition" in town carried them, and out top line was MBQ, which I don't like either lol.

If you want loud look elsewhere than JL. If you want to beat the ever loving shit out of a driver, look elsewhere than JL. If you want an accurate driver look at JL.
If $ is one of your most important deciding factors look elsewhere than JL. It's not cheap, but it really isn't expensive when you compare JL drivers to their real competition (their competition is NOT Fi or SI or any of the internet brands). Priced them against Focal Nobeliums lately? What about Dynaudio? Amps? Priced Zapco or Genesis or any actual high end amp lately? If you're calling JL overpriced you need to really look at the market. JL may be the most expensive widely available brand, but in the realm of pure, accurate reproduction of the signal fed to them, JL drivers are across the line one of the best. If you compare their price/performance (SPL is not what I'm talking about, if you haven't figured that out yet) to the actual high end brands, you'll quickly see that it is a good deal in the big picture.

But again, if your decision is based on "how loud can I get with the least amount of money" get a clue and quit calling JL overpriced because I can apply your flawed logic to plenty of items and make you look stupid.

Well said TAXI!! A Focal 8" sub goes for about $800.00 WTF?
