Ideas on a Custom Box

I have an Olds Achieva and I'd like to throw a whole bunch of subs in the trunk. I really don't know about any really high performance subs but I planned on running four 15 inch Type R's with 6000 watts. On Youtube, I found a guy that put four Zenas Audio 15's in his trunk and it shook his whole car. I'd like to do the same but am unsure of how it would turn out for my car... Any ideas?

Ahh... You again. I haven't upgraded any electrical yet because this has just been an idea in my head and will probably be brought to the table after the motor is redone...

A ton of subs in a sealed box isnt really going to get you loud. Youll want to do one or two 15s on proper power in a proper box. anymore than 1500 ACTUAL watts will require electrical upgrades. First. DONT PUT RIMS ON THAT CAR. Second, be patient and read around on here, watch some videos, and then when you have the money and a motor in your car we will help you, but right now you are making a fool of yourself.

I didn't say that the box was going to be sealed and I WILL put rims on my car (and I'm going to like it). I also know that upgrades to the electrical system will be necessary and I have been installing audio for over 7 years.

PS - There is a motor in the car but I plan on rebuilding it.

The amount of space that would be required for four 15 inch subs ported will conflict with the ability of it to actually function correctly once installed in the application.

Yep... (supposed to go to Ranger)

And I know what would happen if you were to put that many subs in the trunk. There wouldn't be enough air space to have the subs work at and that would cause it to not be loud in the car (it would be loud but not REALLY loud). It would be loud outside the car...

As for space, I've seen a guy with SIX 15's in his trunk and I personally know someone who put TEN 12's in their car, which was of similar size (Buick Century).

Here's the thing. You can't fit four 15s in that trunk, not while giving them the proper airspace. You would need to rip out the back seat and build a wall to fit that many woofers. You'd be hard pressed to get even one beefy 15 in the correct enclosure in that trunk and still maintain any usable trunk space.

And then there's the cost of doing this properly. You're looking at probably $3-4,000 in amplifiers, probably $1000 in subwoofers, probably $400 in batteries, $300-800 for a high-output alternator or two, lots and lots of wire, and the cost of all of the labor to build your wall. Then you'll need to upgrade your car's suspension to support all of the added weight. You're basically looking at investing 4-5 times what your car is worth in the system.

My suggestion would be to just do 2 big 12s or one beefy 15 in a custom ported enclosure (there are plenty of vendors on here that can take your trunk measurements, listening preferences, and equipment into consideration and build you a custom box). Go with around 1500w, and that will bang harder than just about anything you'll encounter out in the real world. With that much power, you can probably get away with upgrading your stock battery and doing a big 3 wire upgrade.

Don't say you've been installing for 7 years, you know you couldn't fit four 15's ported in there. One, maybe 2, properly done would "shake" the car plenty. And you wouldn't need a couple thousand dollars of electrical upgrades like you would need for a true 6kW system. Though, I'd get something better than a Type ARGH. If you wanna move stuff, get something that can really move some air. Lots of port area, and low tuning too. I'd make sure you've got proper mid-bass to pick up when the sub's output drops off after 50hz as well.

Yes, I can fit FOUR 15's in the trunk (I've checked but if you don't want to believe me, that's fine) and I did point out that there wouldn't be enough air space in the trunk. I've also had a "beefy" 15 inn the trunk (Newer Type R with 1000 watts on 4 gauge) and there was plenty of room left to still go and grab groceries. And there would be no wall... I would make sure of it. As far as cost, it would probably be around $2000 - $3000 ($4000 if I wanted all the fancy stuff) if I did all the work myself...

The Type R shook plenty while I was still breaking it in. It is in a good box but maybe it's a little too small for it but I also had a Soundstream next to it and it hit plenty hard. As far as why I have an R, I don't know too many brands and they make good woofers. Oh, and yes I have been installing for 7 years, my first install car was a 1972 Chevelle with 20+ speakers.

There is no way you can get 4 15's in the PROPER enclosure in that...sorry just can't happen. I can't even put 4 15's in my 66 GTO trunk and I know for a fact its bigger than your trunk.

you may want to ask tommy mckinny about how not loud a bunch of subs in a sealed box can get.
