ID CD1e or cd1 pro

I have an opportunity to buy either. full bodies or mini. I am planning to go full. but my question is:

1. Is it worth the extra money to get the pro instead of the cd1e?

2. Will i notice a significant difference?

I plan to use a passive crossover that i will make (from schematics the ID tech gave) but will be EQing using my eclipse cd7000(7band peq).

iirc i can only use passive on the cd1e and not the pro. correct? I dont think my deck has a fancy enough dsp to handle the pro?...or am i wrong?

thanks. oh btw id like for them to play down to 1kish. my mids are hertz hsk 165s if it matters.

Go with the pro's makes a huge difference. The CD1e's are piezo based drivers (ewww), the pro's are not. In terms of horns, night and day difference. Better efficiency, smoother response... the pro's sre simply superior to the 1e's in every way but price.

How about the passive? still usable? How do you feel about my deck...is it fancy enough? I know I can go active on the deck(i am right now on my hertz) but is 7 band peq going to be sufficient, cause i know horns take quite a bit of tuning. highest slope i can use is 18db.

thanks

Passives work off the impedance of the speaker. So as long as the 1e and pro have the ssame impedance, a passive should operate the same for both of them.

The old piezo driven compression horns were what gained them notoriety as needing lots of EQ'ing to get flat. The pro's (and up) dont require as much. I suspect you'd be fine with your 7-band setup. Try it, if you want more, upgrtade your processor next.

i see, i hope the 7peq is enough. req says it is enough after you use the passive.(not quoting him). on ssa i was told i dont have enough processing though by another user. idk if he has golden ears or something, cause my ears are more bronze then silver or gold.

can you define peizo driven?

The passive shouldn't affect your EQ settings really. The passive would cut out freqs the horn shouldn't be required to play, same as an active unit would, but the freqs left still need EQ'ing. Not using a passive would mean using an active xo, which would still require (apprx) the same EQ settings.
Piezo speaker:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudspeakers#Piezoelectric_speakers

"Piezoelectricity

In 1880, Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered an unusual characteristic of certain crystalline minerals: when subjected to a mechanical force, the crystals became electrically polarized. Tension and compression generated voltages of opposite polarity, and in proportion to the applied force. Subsequently, the converse of this relationship was confirmed: if one of these voltage-generating crystals was exposed to an electric field it lengthened or shortened according to the polarity of the field, and in proportion to the strength of the field. These behaviors were labeled the piezoelectric effect and the inverse piezoelectric effect, respectively, from the Greek word piezein, meaning to press or squeeze.

Although the magnitudes of piezoelectric voltages, movements, or forces are small, and often require amplification (a typical disc of piezoelectric ceramic will increase or decrease in thickness by only a small fraction of a millimeter, for example) piezoelectric materials have been adapted to an impressive range of applications. The piezoelectric effect is used in sensing applications, such as in force or displacement sensors. The inverse piezoelectric effect is used in actuation applications, such as in motors and devices that precisely control positioning, and in generating sonic and ultrasonic signals." - http://www.americanpiezo.com/piezo_theory/

Basically, piezo speakers are those tiny little speakers used in cell phones and such. Very small.

oh wow. seems peizos would require a SHITON more EQing than if i used the pros.
Correct. Again, piezo drivers are what gave compression horns their notoriety as requiring lots of EQ'ing. That's also probably the basis for the guy telling you 7 bands wont be enough, he really doesn't understand this.

thanks dude. see! you dont like to argue in all your threads //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

The "crossover" that came with the Piezo based CD1e's from my understanding didn't even do any highpassing of the horn itself. It had an EQ circuit for the horn and lowpassed the mid. The Piezo based units have a natural rolloff around 1200hz. Also from what I have heard ID did away with the Piezo based units and now sell the CD1e's with actual compression drivers.

As Audioholic said; The choice between the CD1e and CD1 Pro is a no-brainer.

Im putting cd1pro's in my DD. I'll step up to CD2's if/when I find a good deal on just the right ones. Otherwise, the pro's are a good solid horn imo. I wouldn't even mess with 1e's personally.

Squeak, are you using horns in your vehicle?
Not at the moment.

I was running Illusion CH1 horns about 2 years ago.

Been thinking about switching back to horns again. If I did I would probably go with something like a B&C, BMS or Radian compression driver on the ID full body horns.

But right now I want to screw around with a 3-way frontstage a little bit.

cool cool. Yeah i am so going to buy the cd1 pros. i just got to wait for 2 things.

1. my new credit card to come in so i can update paypal.

2. see if seller can find out if the full bodies will fit.
