IB install, sealing off the trunk. Would this work?

Could I seal off the trunk from the cabin like most people do when installing subs, but leave them free air (IB) and not build a box around the back of the subs. Basicly have the two 10's IB in the trunk. I'm not sure how well this would work. Any one have experience doing this? Wanting alot of SQ but still retain a good amount of low end

That's the way to go if you want low end. Your output may be reduced due to lower mechanical power handling though. Make sure that you seal the trunk off from the cabin as much as possible. The trunk doesn't need to be completely sealed from the outside of the car though.

I would still retain a decent amount of SQ tho, correct? Because as of now, after building the box im currently using I honestly dont see much difference in SQ going from ported to sealed. It sounds almost the same to me. Maybe I need to do some more tuning, but I dont see much of a difference which I find odd.

Well it depends on how you are defining SQ. IB installs are basically the best way to get the natural sound out of the subs. With no loading on the subs, there should not be any coloration besides the natural distortion of the drivers themselves. The frequency response is usually pretty flat and smooth when in a true IB setup but in a car, the transfer function of the vehicle will play a role in boosting the low end. The drivers should sound more mellow and smooth like with most low Q alignments.

Well im not sure how to explain what I mean about SQ. My definition is wrong, considering the true definition of SQ. When I say SQ, I'm basicly saying I want the drivers to sound as clean and crisp as possible. Decent low end, responsive, punchy.

If you are using the Eclipses in your sig you should be able to accomplish what you are looking for in a sealed box. But it may take a couple of tries to get it right. I would try and build a couple different sealed boxes.

Yeah. I'm using the ones in my sig. I think I will try a few boxes before I seal off the trunk. I went by my owners manual for the subs and used the recommended enclosure volume. Just not getting what I want out of them. I belive what i'll try next is the same just, just no seperation. Put them in the same box without a divider.

It is very difficult to understand what you are asking.

So what about your current sound are you not liking. "Clean" and "crisp" are not measurable adjectives and that means that they are up to personal interpretation.

Is it a frequency response issue? Delay issue?

I think it is hard to get clean output with any kind of box in the trunk. I've got 2 10s on a baffle suspended below the rear deck and a great seal otherwise between the trunk and the passenger compartment. Very flat, low and smooth.

I agree with Rudy. A box placed in the trunk creates a quasi-bandpass effect alot of times imo, it really narrows the useable bandwidth of the substage. Sealing the trunk off from the passenger compartment and firing directly into the passenger space is the best way to get good SQ results in a trunk car imo. Once you've sealed it off, you can play with any enclosure type (or IB) that you want to acheive the results you desire.

You wont likely get much 'punchy' bass from an IB install. If anything, Id call IB response smooth. Punchy implies upper bass, midbass, which IB will likely not reproduce well.
