Best way to prep basket?

Gonna do my first recone. What should I use to get all the gunk, surround residue, hard epoxy, off of the surround and spider landing? Tried a razor blade but it wasn't working too well and I'm afraid to knick up my beautiful claw basket.

Also, where can I get the glue? What's it called, CA glue? I always see threads asking where to get but there's never a straight answer.

you should just read my RD audio Elite SPL recone thread. it has links to Ca glue suppliers and explains what I cleaned the basket with.

The mods should probably sticky it for people like you, but ngsm's lame recone thread is still up there in the subwoofer section, and it mentions nothing of what you want to know about.

i use a dremel to remove the existing glue off a basket. or 36 grit sand paper.

i also used 30min extra strenght 2 part epoxy that you can buy at home depot or an auto parts store.

Glad it provided what ya needed. Its kinda too bad it wasnt stickied, it might actually help out some people in the future. And its not like I took pictures and spent the time to write it up for my health or something.

Hmmm confused on shimming the VC. Is it to keep the VC centered and not touching the sides? Or is it to keep the VC off the bottom of the motor and the spider level?

well when your shimming it, all you care about is the clearance being equal on the circumfrence of the pole peice. when you get this alignment correct, you want to glue the spider. That way, no matter what the coil is aligned properly even if the spider is malformed or off by a bit.
