I think i blew my E8s... (pics)

this just happened to me and my e8s. i didnt notice anything wrong either, until i looked closer at the tinsel lead. there was a small burn mark on one and it did in fact break in half at the burn mark.

each of my subs is seeing about 200w and theyre not being clipped so im not sure what exactly happened. i ended up putting dome solder on it and it was good to go again. try that and i bet it works for ya.

its the tinsel leads. can almost guarantee it. you even said there was a burn mark on one and i bet its split at that burn mark. thats why the coils arent reading.

Seems like a lot of these e8s have reoccurring problems. I know several people who have blown them without any real reason of them going. All playing with gains and crossovers set correct. Everyone that blew is having the same issue as you are. I don't know if it is a QC problem or the soldering coming loose for the tinsel leads. Sucks cause these are pretty nice subwoofers too.

I've had the same problem with my DC. Not sure how it happened either. Coil looks great so doubt there was any clipping. Hope you figure out why it happened.

so you didn't set the gain with a DMM correct? so you don't really know how hard the sub was being pushed correct????
Not really, but i've been playing with them for longer than a month now and i've pushed them wayyyy harder before and nothing was happening. I've played them for about 2 hours straight, full tilt, and the subs still played fine, dont know why recently when i havent been playing them full tilt they decide to break on me.

The burnt one i'll try to solder in the burnt mark, but the other one has no signs of burning or anything, i have no idea what happened //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

this is why they were discontinued. people use them like dd1508s and they just aren't that capable. thus high failure rate. Mr. Fuller made reference to this when talking of their discontinuation and the emergence of a new, different 8" out of sundown

Yeah, but you know some of the end users are going to toss 1,000 watts to a single SA-8 when they hit the market.

Thats why jacob makes recone kits //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

What are the SA-8's rated at?

IIRC they are rated at 400 watts RMS. At least that is what I remember him saying in the video tests. The only thing that worries me is the FS in the 40 hz range.

ETA - I knew I saw this somewhere:

SPECIFICATIONS OF D2 Coil (D4 will be similar) :

RE: 3.28 ohms (series)

FS: 41.6 Hz

Qes: 0.513

Qms: 6.606

Qts: 0.476

Le: 2.778 mH

Vas: 3.285 L

BL: 17.138 N/A

Cms: 83.341 um/N

Mms: 175.654 g

Sens: 78.476 dB @ 1w/1m

POWER: 400 RMS

5.25" depth

8.25" overall basket OD (no gasket)

7.25" cut-out diameter

6.25" magnet diameter

We suggest 0.6 - 1 cube ported tuned to 30-40 hz based on your goals and preferences.

Sealed can be utilized but is not optimal for these drivers.

I dunno if you guys got them from Mike (woofercooker) Or sundown but it sounds as if the tinsel lead is coming apart where the coil and leads come together under the dustcap.. Seen this happen alot on all kinds of subs. But that is what im guessing is happening...
