As I understand it.. it's about how the force is applied to the cone and the cone's ability to maintain -proper- shape.. when the cone is oval and you are pushing up in a circle in the middle, the edges of the cone can flex a bit and get a little distorted..

On the other hand, with a round cone, the force is consistent across the entire surface area, the cone stays more stable, and produces a cleaner sound...

At least, that's my understanding of it.. Makes sense to me from the little physics/geometry I have in my background..

Would it be worth scrapping my 6X9's in favor of say 6.5's then. Considering i have no subs?

Also how much of a difference would an amp make to the speakers and would it be worth investing in that also.

I can't really recomend dropping the 6x9s or tell you what 6.5s would be good..

I think it's all based on how much power you are running to the speakers, actaully.. I mean, if you are running decent 6x9s on a factory HU you should be fine.. If you decide you want more volume and think you want an amp, as long as the amp pushes a lot less than the 6x9s can take you should be ok too.. Now, if you want to get an amp that will push good and are looking to upgrade speakers to match the amp, I'd suggest getting 6.5s instead of new 6x9s.. just from what I've heard about those..
