i have a 1200 watt s channel amp and a 500 watt sub.

Are you running it bridged? If so then ur running 4 ohms bridged. Specs on that amp are 1200x1 br @4ohms...(laughter aside). It has a 25 fuse, which I'm thinking that that amp will put out around 200 watts total. After thumping for a little bit check the sub to make sure it isn't warm(amp also), if not then ur fine, if they are hot turn the gain down on the amp. You should be fine. Hope this helps.
