I guess it's recone time.. What would cause this?

That makes sense. What is the point of running at 4ohm at all? Also, so any amount of clip hurts the sub? I thought that a soft clip was typically how people set their gains.

soft clip is fine... that would be the equivalent of setting the gain with a -5 db tone and playing -4 to -3 db recording levels.   You are at a pretty big clip at -10 db settings.

Welp, ordered my recone kit and did some prep on the sub still need to finish the spider landing. This will be my first recone. Used some cheap sound deadner to cover the coil gap, it pulls off clean.

That means they charge a flat fee and pocket the difference.
