HU stuck in demo mode??

Why would a Pioneer DEH-P6500 automatically go into "DEMO" mode and none of the buttons on the face-plate work? If I put a CD in, the only function that works is volume. Defective?

What's better: Pioneer DEH-P6500 or Alpine CDA-9847 ??
