HT sub question

I bought some HT subs off of CL the other day. what i got was a pair of Shiva MKIII 12" subs, 2x 250w dayton plates, and 2 identical enclosures built by this dude to specs of a setup someone posted online. (idk... vented with sub downfiring)

anyways, i want to know how much power these subs will take. they're wired individually to each amp at 8ohms (only 1 VC). i want to know if it's safe to wire them to 4ohms, or will this give them too much power? i think the amps are rated at 250wrms @ 4ohm. fwiw, i haven't set them up and listened to them yet, but i know more is better, hence the question.

they are fuckin solid bruh

so i can throw 250w at each w/o much issue then? i want to wire each to 4ohms (using both coils) rather than how it is currently (8ohms using only 1 of 2 coils). i hope to get these setup this evening //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/boink.gif.91933e72f927f2cefc79aff02573090c.gif

Definitely wire them to 4ohms using both coils. Wiring only one coil is ghetto and who knows what the woofer specs are with just one coil hooked up. Granted, the original owner could have measured t/s with one coil and built the box accordingly...if he knew what he was doing.

What are the box specs?

i doubt he knew all that crap. and idk the specs of the box. i can measure i guess. hooked them up as they were, and they are pretty loud. i need to find a better place for them though, as they kinda sound like crap where they are. i'm thinking in the closet?

my bed is where i sit. lol. the room is maybe 12' square and my bed is against the back wall with the projector shooting to the front wall. i can't physically put them behind where i sit. they won't fit under, so the closet is about my only other option, rather than having them by the front towers where they are now.

meh. i'd rather take both amps and put them on a DC lvl4 18 built into the bottom of my closet

Adire actually recommended using a single coil in some cases. By using one coil you can short out the other one or place a resistor between the other coil and alter the electrical q value of the woofer. Powerhandling is only about 75% of maximum. The shiva was one of the first subs to have people experiment with it after dan brought it up. Any DVC sub can have this done, but a few are known for it. AA atlas's actually were specc'ed in both low and high q mode by ascendant audio on the specs page.. This may be the case here, I'm not sure.

Anyway the Shiva's pretty much started the supersub craze and the xmax race as we know it. They were the best budget subs in the day that outperformed even the super expensive premade stuff. RMS on the shiva was 600 watts and they have about 16mm of xmax. Very clean woofer, standard motor structure but very well built.

Also to whomever mentioned it. The Shiva X on diycable is NOT the standard shiva. They use none of the same parts or even the same tech. Speaker tech has moved forward alot since 1998. The shiva X uses XBL^2 and is alot more like a brahma. Albeit a later gen brahma, as only the mark IV had shorting rings IIRC. If Adire hadnt' hadn't build quality issues near the end Exodus audio's lineup is what the later adire line would have been like. Dan actually designs the drivers for that company and Kevin the owner keeps over head low and what not, to help continue where adire left off in regards to providing very musical high output low distortion drivers at a good price for the DIY market. That's why Kevin (exodus audio's owner) uses the older adire drivers names for his lineup.

so i wired them to 4 ohms each last night. didnt notice much difference really. also, they dont seem to go as low on music as i had hoped, but they do really well for movie scenes. i think a lot of it is that they aren't positioned correctly. idk, but i'll get it figured out.

Cool, I did not know that.
