How to know if subs are blown?

go get a DMM. Find out the DCR on your subs' coils from the manufacturer. Test the coils with the DMM if the result is lower than the original DCR then the sub is either starting to go bad or its done.

Also if you get no reading on your DMM in the ohms mode, it is trash.

1.get a 6 volt d/c battery

connect it to the sub

in free air u supposed to get a full cone excursion out and the cone remains there until u disconnect the battery with no extra vibration.

2. remove the speaker from the enclosure and smell the pole piece and around the spider assembly. If it smells like a burnt circuit or burnt plastic u fried the coil.

3. check it with an electric ohm meter. If you blew the coil of burnt it the impedance reading u get would be different from the impedance rating of the speaker by more that .5 ohm.

ps: don't push on your dustcap. The coil will only scratch if you press the cone out of alignment or unevenly. Hence this is not a good way to check this.

Pushing GENTLY on the dust cap never hurt anything. If the coil is fried, some times it will come unwrapped.. which will cause that rubbing feeling. If your wailing on the cone with your hand then yes.. you can push it out of alignment.. but if its a slow up and down you're fine.

The smell not always is a tell tale mark. A lot of subs smell like theyre burning when they first get run or even later in the life span. totally normal.

If you think its blown and dont want to push on the dust cap, take it out, and smell the hole in the bottom of the magnet. If its blown, it should smell like a burning band aid

ok, i just went outside and did it...i didnt get a scratchin noise at all...so they arent blown?

I think the sound you are describing is the subs moving too far, especially when it hits hard, mine do it too. But mine is a result of overpowering.
