How to install subs with stock 6-disk Headhunit and speakers in Ford Explorer

My buddy just recently sold his car, but kept the subs and amp. He picked up a 97 Ford Explorer with the stock speakers and 6-disk headunit. Is there anyway he can use the stock speakers and headunit with his previous amp/subs? I've searched the web a little, but only get info on mustangs which may or may not use the same headunits since its ford. I figured I'de try here b/c it helped a TON when I installed my first car audio in my maxima
