how to blow a sub

to the two morons that disagree with me and say that underpowering can blow a sub are just plainly retarded, clipping and underpowering are two different things.when you turn your volume down you are 'under powering' the sub so how do you explain your theory? you are an idiot explain this myth to me please. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080311174600AAJOxZJ

Well it was the first explination that popped up on google but anyways underpowering and clipping are entirely different meanings.underpowering a sub causing it to fail is simply a myth,if that was the case then i guess when i turn my volume down im killing my sub and if thats true then the guy is saying we should push our subs 100% to extend the life time of them.

I understand what you are saying, I was just saying that a noob with a weak amp(underpower) will turn the gain into clipping because he wants more power and thay CAN damage a sub

Hah. You missed the ninja edit in your quote //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Not much man. "Working" on stuff for class.

yea...didn't see the edit...WORK SUX!!!!

how long did you sit in the drive listening to the q?

yes you are right turning the gains up to high to try to push more power because they have weak amps does cause clipping, turning gains up doesnt necessarily mean more power and trying to compensate for weak amps by turning the gains up all the way doesnt help any lol but yes you are right about weak amps but under powering is alot different than nasty signals from weak amps and such

sry im just new to this term as far as understanding exactly what it is... Wouldnt a 500W amp at full gain be the only way to get 500W out of it, or does running more gain on an amp push it above its RMS
Most any amp will clip if the gain's turned all the way up.

this is the reason why people say under powering causes subs to "blow"

When you clip an amplifier, its output skyrockets, and you are probably no longer 'underpowering' the speaker(s).

"Underpowering" is a stupid term anyway. Just because you can overpower a speaker doesn't mean you can also underpower one. There really is no such thing.
