How noticeable is a 3db gain?

3 db gain is alot of difference, usually they say either double ur power to get it or double ur cone area, but in the world of spl comp's 3db is a major increase
On the meter, it's a big difference.

To the ear, it's noticeable but not a "huge" difference.

when i went fro a 300 watt amp to a 600 watt amp lanzar to xenon, the difference was small, things wer a lil louder and a lot cleaner more accurate and musical, but i had thought double the power was going to blow chit up......i was wrong

no different
On a meter, correct.

To the ear, Incorrect.

The louder you are, the less noticeable the difference will become to the ear.

You would likely notice a larger difference in tactile sensation than you would in actual perceived sound at relatively high output levels.

And as I mentioned briefly above...the frequency has A LOT to do with it.

150db at 20hz is going to sound drastically different than 150db at 70hz.

Extreme example; 130db at 50hz is going to sound drastically different than 130db at 1khz. 130db at 1khz would deafen you...literally. Yet 130db at 50hz is considered "quiet" (relatively) in the world of subbass

My guess would be that they were at different frequencies.
Or, that the difference where your head was located was more than 3db.

Or, we have different definitions of "big difference".
or all three. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

at 150+ dB sound is strictly noise and differences are tactile....3dB is not a large tactile difference to most people's deffenition of large if both sounds where at the same frequincy.

Both of my boxes are tuned the same to play the same song in USACi street beat which is similar to the BASS Race stuff...I am the loudest in USACi in both classes ...over 3db louder in SB2 than my closest competitor...he is currently at 150.5 so I know what I'm doing...By over 100 wins with the tropheys to back it and nothing but first place for 3 years straight in SPL

Tape a termlab to your head. Do a burp, then do another burp ~3dB louder.

Just the thought of someone doing that makes me laugh

for me...

anything in the mid 40's, i can notice a 3db increase.

147-150 = a little

150-153 = barely

153-156 = nothing sounded different

this was all below 50hz.
