hey everyone, i received my new alt. and need to know ballpark how much a mechanic will charge to install it. I have a honda accord '92 sedan. I heard that the alternator is a pain to access. thanks

depends on how much of a pain it is----a huge pain will probably cost 2 hours labor. i had a 97 taurus that had a fcked up alt spot--they had to unbolt the rear engine mounts and tilt the motor forward to get to it.

easy straight forward job. the power steering has one bolt that must be loosened to get it to swing upward cuz the alt sits directly under it. Once there, there are 2 bolts that hold the alt in, one in the front and the other underneath.... took me about 1 hr tops and this was with no mechanical experience and a few tools.

Get a helms/hayes repair manual for your car. Gives you all the steps needed. Its a great book that comes in handy for many things.

It LOOKS like an easy straightforward job, but it is a real pain in the *** on Accords.

Maybe the '90-'93 is easier but my '96 was a nightmare. I did do it myself, but quickly ran into trouble. There is almost no space to work with near the alternator mount pivot bolt and that bolt was so badly corroded and stuck that I stripped it. It took me probably a couple hours extra with a dremel tool and cutting wheels to cut the fool bolt off then I had to go find a replacement at Lowe's.

Figure a couple hours dyi and an hour with a mechanic, assuming they don't run into trouble.

The hardest thing to do would be get the alt belt, back on thier everything else is just bolted on.

For the belt to get it on use a crowbar, to push down on the alt, it should have a bolt that alows it to move a little, keep it loose push down on alt and put the belt on and make sure its tight, then tighten the last bolt up and ur done..

This is all assuming you have power tools or know of someone who does, unless you can get busy wt a ratchet

well just got it done. took about 1 hour 'cause had to change belt. total= $70. alright i guess.
