Wire size

Ok i'm a newb so you guys can flame away

I have a modest dual 10" 500w system (thats all i know about the subs as of now. More info when they arrive) and a 500w boss amp (i forgot the model name and their website is down. Basicly i need to buy a wire/installation kit. and i read somewhere on this forum that 4 gage would be enough. I think 8 gage is bigger but im not sure. Basicly im wondering if i just buy the beefyiest kit will i be alright or will there be more resistance in the wires. Please also let me know what the beefiest kit is. If not then i'll wait untill i actually can see my subs and amp and then ill decide from there. Thx

You can never use wire that's TOO large - the larger the wire the less resistance. However, if it's far bigger than the amp requires it will be frustrating to work with and difficult to connect to the amp.

It sounds like an 8 ga kit (8 is smaller diameter than 4 ga) would work for your amp, but the price difference between 8 and 4 is really not much and 4 would allow for future upgrades.

I would suggest 4.

to be honest, dont expect much more than 300 watts or so. 8 guage will work perfectly. walmart sells a SCOCHE kit for like $25

8 will do fine, but I might run 4 just incase you decide to upgrade in the future (price difference isnt that much)

What I did is run 4ga from the battery to the trunk and then run it into a power block and run a 2' 8ga lead from the power block to the amp to ease frustration of tryin to get 4ga in a hole it barely fits in.

Thx alot. I dunno why i thought 8g was bigger than 4 g. But yea i know the amp wont be more than 300w but it says 500 and if i said 300 you would have thought it was 150. So thx. Also i have seen alot of people put some tweets and 6x9's in the sub enclosure with the subs. Mines going in the trunk so will i get any benifit in this? My car has 5 inch rounds for the components and i have no room for pods. Thats why i ask

A buddy of mine used that Scosche kit (marked like 1100 watt dual amp kit or something similar) and for what it came with it was actually pretty good for the price

The Wal-Mart kits are definitely worth the cost. The $20 kit is actually 9 ga -- it is well worth it to spend the extra $5 for the 5 ga kit.
