How high is safe (volume)?

What do you guys do about turning up the volume? I usually try to stay at halfway or less because im afraid of messing stuff up. But I know a guy who shows his subs off at maximum volume. So what do you guys think?

Crank it 'till it smokes then back off 1/4 turn.

when i'm trying to impress people, i'll turn it up all the way with no problems, although i don't do that for very long because i have some crap subs, 2 12" crunch drive. all the rest of the time, i do what you do, half volume. of course, that's partially because i have a stick and have to hear what the engine is doing, i'm not that great of a driver with it.
