How hard would it be to do a recone myself?

Basically I just bought a sub off of CL that had a fucked up coil (still plays, just distorts terribly on some notes when played loud, also spare me the lecture, I know I should have checked the ****.), & I was thinking about eventually reconing it myself.

Would this be a difficult task? Or expensive? It is a Audioque 18 inch HDC3 alum coil woofer.

What other recones could I use for the motor?

Sorry if I'm asking any stupid questions here, I'm obviously pretty new to the whole custom sub idea.

How much would either of those run me? just like a general estimate, or anyone who has bought an AQ recone before. Need more feedback, thank you very much bhs.

dbeez is doing a recone for me right now on a AQ hdc3 18... i think the recone kits are around 100 bucks (not positive on that)... its pretty straight foward...

ED from T3 does a really good job of explaining (even tho there are TONS of vids and how-to's on recones)

So if I were to buy the recone kit from AQ, would it include the glue & any other materials I may need? (besides clamps)

I watched the video and it seems pretty straight forward, somebody said that it would just be a drop in, does that mean I wouldn't have to do any of that **** with the shims and stuff?

& is there any possible way that I could damage the new recone while installing it? That is what I am mainly afraid of.

CA glue, lots of clamps for the surround and some solder for the terminals...some people prefer different glue though
Don't need solder for an AQ since they use direct connects. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It will not include the glue, you will have to buy that separately from a hobby shop (CA glue) or hardware store (goop, 5 min epoxy, etc.).

Yes you will have to shim it, but it's a pretty easy process.

Read THIS thread. It has pics that explains the whole process.

you would still have to use the shims, as they are used to center the coil when installing the spider... otherwise, you will very easily get coil rub, and yet another re-cone.

he pretty much was doing a drop in kit in the video, as some people will actually build their own re cone kits (buying the coil, spider, cone, etc... seperately)... so the steps in the video, are the steps you will need to take. and the kit usually doesnt include glue, and will not include clamps... but glue is pretty cheap, and clamps are really chep

I agree, but it was helpful. So what would I use for the shims? o_O Sorry, I know i'm nubby. & I couldn't understand in the video, what was that stuff he was spraying? Also, which email would I get a hold of AQ for a quote on how much the recone would cost?

You can use pretty much any kind of paper/notecards for shims. Most of the time I use 3x5 index cards.

He is spraying activator on the CA glue. What that does is harden the glue instantly versus having to wait forever for it to dry.

Welcome to Audioque - Amazing car audio for those that know quality. for the recone and I think they run around $80-100.

he was spraying activator onto the spider, as CA glue is a 2 part glue (glue and activator)

i would just call AQ and talk to them... get ALOT faster results than trying to go through email
